Heart disease is the number 1 killer of women
– more deadly than all forms of cancer combined. In fact, 1 in 3 women die of heart disease
and stroke each year. 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for heart disease
or stroke. But there is hope… I am pleased to partner
with the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement to take a stand against
heart disease. Women are strong. We are smart. We solve problems. Women can do anything men can do. And, there are some things we’re even better at – like dying of heart disease and stroke. I am inviting each one of you to the Go Red For Women luncheon on Friday, May 15. I look forward to gathering with hundreds of women from across central Oklahoma to fight cardiovascular disease and stroke. Building a healthier state for Oklahomans
to live, work and raise a family is one of my top priorities as governor, which is why
earlier this year, I laid out a goal to decrease heart disease deaths in the state by 25 percent
by the year 2025. This will save 2,400 lives per year. With the help of Go Red For Women, we will
continue to educate, promote and raise awareness about what we can do to stop this deadly disease
and meet and surpass this goal. By getting involved with the Go Red For Women
movement, we can learn about early indicators of heart disease. And, manage heart disease
risk by eating healthier, exercising more, managing blood pressure and quitting smoking.
We can all live in a healthier, more prosperous Oklahoma. The most important moment of the Go Red For Women luncheon is when we open our hearts to personally join the American Heart Association’s mission. To build healthier lives, free of heart disease and stroke right here in our community. You will have the opportunity to join with many at the luncheon to contribute to this life-saving mission. So, our mothers, daughters, granddaughters, sisters and friends have the chance to live longer, stronger lives. Heart disease and stroke are no match for the power of our voices and our resources. Thank you for your support of the American Heart Association and Go Red For Women. I look forward to seeing you on May 15th. Put it on your calendar!
