A Routine Eye Exam Saved Her Life

A Routine Eye Exam Saved Her Life

I went through a year of being very sick. Nobody could really figure out what was happening. In 2012, I spent three weeks in the hospital. I was having tremors, rapid heart beat, I
was sweating. My eyes were protruding. My students started to make comments to me
and I didn’t really know how to answer. I went in for my yearly eye exam. So I was explaining all this to my eye doctor. He said it sounded like there might be an
issue with my thyroid. My primary care doctor did a thyroid ultrasound
and they did blood work. It came back that I had Graves’ Disease. If it hadn’t been caught when it was caught
I was told I would have had a heart attack. Because I’ve been going to Dr. Smithson for
so long and having that relationship it really helped me to feel comfortable. Living off a teacher’s income is obviously
not why people get into teaching. Fortunately for me, having that support of
insurance is invaluable.
