Angelica Species (Dong Quai): Not My Favourite Herb for Female Health

Hi, I’m Dr. James Meschino. Angelica species, or Dong Quai, is not my
favorite herb for female health conditions. Angelica Species, or Dong Quai, is native
to China. Its active ingredients are found in the roots
and the rhizomes of the plant. It is traditionally used for the treatment
of menstrual cramps or dysmenorrhea as it is called, also for symptoms of PMS or pre-menstrual
syndrome and to block hot flashes and other symptoms associated with menopausal complaints. The reason that it works is because active
constituents in Angelica Species have these estrogen-like compounds. They are not estrogen, but they have estrogen-like
behavior, about 1/400th the potency of the body’s natural estrogens. This means that it is effective in treating
conditions where there’s an estrogen to progesterone imbalance. If you have very high estrogen and low progesterone,
this often aggravates problems like PMS, menstrual cramps, uterine fibroids and so on. If you take Angelica Species, the weaker estrogens
actually combine to the tissue receptors first, blocking the ability of the body’s more powerful
estrogens from exerting their affect. In a way, you tone down the estrogen to progesterone
influence on the tissues. And so by toning down the affects of estrogen,
Angelica Species has been shown to be useful in treating pre-menstrual syndrome and menstrual
cramps. And then when estrogen levels drop really
low, as they do in menopause, the estrogen activity of Angelica Species puts a little
estrogen back into the body gently, and helps to block hot flashes and other symptoms. It actually works quite well. However, here is my concern when it comes
to Angelica Species. The plant contains a lot of coumarins. The word coumarin sounds like the drug Coumadin. Coumadin is a powerful anticoagulant. It inhibits platelet clotting. Coumarins do the same thing. They can increase the likelihood of internal
bleeding. There have been some human case reports suggesting
that Angelica Species, taken by women, results in some bleeding tendencies. This makes me very nervous. This means that you could never combine the
herb. If you are taking
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Indomethacin or Motrin,
which not only reduce inflammation, but also thin the blood, then you add Angelica Species,
you are actually thinning the blood to an excessive degree. If there is a small break in a blood vessel,
you can’t clot in time and now you have internal bleeding. It could happen in your brain. It could happen in the GI track. You don’t want to bleed to death. For people that are taking Coumadin, Warfarin,
Plavix or some of the new generations of anticoagulant drugs the risk would be significant. Many women over the age of 50 who might use
Angelica Species to manage menopause or another condition may already be on an aspirin a day
or taking an anti-inflammatory for an arthritic condition or cardiovascular issue. There doctor may already have them on Coumadin
or Warfarin. Angelica Species, just by itself, may actually
increase the risk of some bleeding. You do not want to bleed to death. I believe it is always better to take a supplement
for those purposes that will not give you that risk. I personally like the combination of Black
Cohosh with Soy Extract and Gamma Oryzanol. This is usually where I direct women who want
relief from menstrual cramps, PMS, menopausal symptoms and uterine fibroids. Click on the link below to read my short review
article on Angelica Species and get the details. Many female support supplements in the marketplace
actually contain Angelica Species, which concerns me. So, if you are taking anything like that,
check the label on the supplement bottle carefully to make sure that there is no Angelica Species
there. If it is there, at the least, I want you to
know about it because this information really might save your life in the end. Take a few minutes to read the article that
