China’s Vape Industry Is Just Getting Started

Hi, I’m Chelsea from the Vice office in Brooklyn. Our colleagues at our China office took a look at the vaping industry in their country. In this episode they explore this lucrative market, and what the future of vaping will look like. This is what we buy; ecigs. This might look like a Friday night at a crappy Beijing nightclub, but is actually the 2015 China vape expo in Shenzhen. I walked in to find models showing vapes on the catwalk, surrounded by guys with heavy cameras. Pretty much what you’d expect from a Chinese trade show. Vaporizers are a simple electronic product. Nicotine oil, or e-juice goes into the vape and the atomizer turns it into vapour while you inhale. E-juice comes in all kinds of flavours, from cake and mojito to chilli pepper flavour. The expo is full of foreign brands, mainly American companies. So I talked to some of them about today’s vape market. We have very high expectations for the Asian market you know, Asia is sending us all the hardware So, why don’t we sell China a safe alternative of American or European juices. And The expectation is that we have a very good chance to get a good chair in the Asian or Chinese market We hear a lot about a growing market in Asia I mean you have so many people smoking This is the future of tobacco The vaporizer market is already maturing in the U.S. and an emerging one in China. The interesting thing is China produces most of the world’s vapes and 90% of them were manufactured in Shenzhen I met up with Greg, the owner of NY Vape Shop He lives in Shenzhen, where he oversees production for his brand. Amy is a factory owner, and a long term business partner of Greg’s. She is only 28, but has already found her place in the electronics industry. We’re purchasing on occa- like, during busy seasons thousands of vaporizers and they’re able to produce it very quickly So, the battery for example. This is uhh- This is for putting together the PCB fab I mean this is very simple technology. There are dozens of companies that’ll sell product for 80 dollars, or 60 dollars, or 50 dollars. But it’s all the same. The only difference is we’re putting a different brand on it. We also distribute as well but we focus more of our time with our online business, compared to the big brands. We sell them at a much more affordable price for the consumer. It’s still really hot back in the States, people are still buying. Just the problem is the vaporizer shops just have way too much inventory to be able to sell so much. These don’t have enough foot-traffic to be able to sell a lot, keep buying. Supporters of vaping say it’s not bad for you, but how true is that? I met with Dr. Zhang Shunan to find out. In busy areas like Beijing’s [inaudible], more and more vape stores are popping up Even if vaping might not help me quit smoking, I still wanted to see what kind of fun you could have with vapes. So I went to check out Lee vape shop The way I see it, vaping is just a substitute for smoking. Sellers might claim it can help you quit smoking, but it seems more likely a marketing trick It seems ironic that Chinese made vapes. get exported around the world, and then come back to China; marketed as part of foreign vaping culture.

  1. China produces a vast majority of the e-cigs on Earth—but why are its residents slow to pick up the habit? VICE China investigates.

  2. 1:06 the fat dude’s vaping was not cooool at all. That’s the problem with it. So many ppl gonna waste their life sitting home vaping like a piece of shit

  3. God damn. Asian chicks are so hot..
But of course retailers have too much inventory, everyone wants the new hotness and these manufacturers are putting out 577653 new mods and tanks every two days, and for the most part, it is all the same basic shit with different stickers and shapes.

It's true a lot of bad vape products are made in China, but a lot of very good vape products are also made in China. Don't buy cheap clones and/or shit from Wish and AliExpress and expect a quality product and a wonderful experience. You get what you pay for, just like everything else.

In my experience it is the cotton and coils that make all the difference. Once you use high quality organic cotton and coil wire you can't ever go back.

Plus, I have no desire whatsoever to vaporize and inhale directly into my body whatever chemicals and contaminants are absorbed into my cotton. Or to use wire made with God knows what. There are reasons why the shit is so cheap.

This all comes when there is little to no quality control regulation and production standards enforced where these products are manufactured..
Fuuuuuuck that man! I'll gladly spend the few extra dollars for a safer and far better vape experience.

  4. they make the vapes for the super cool americans then they buy the vapes to be like the super cool americans! Only thing that can make this better is if they all had on maga hats and yezzys!

  5. i watched this video from beginning to end and my question still wasn't answered.
will there be dumpling flavored vape juice?

  6. If you are vaping and not smoking…you're not smoking. Considering how many are going to die from smoking in China, vaping may just be a good idea as quitting is not that easy once hooked to nicotine. It's not nicotine oil either…you cannot vape oil.

  7. Vaping instead of smoking is a improvement because vapes don't combust anything and basically only contain nicotine and steam (although some flavors may contain unhealthy substances). A cigarette contains lots of nasty stuff such as tar and the combustion creates even more.

  8. comment from China. vape is much more healthier. I bought a small one for my dad last week. and i hope he can stop smoking eventually

  9. No little chinese girl "it can help you stop smoking" is NOT a marketing trick! I know way too many people who tried for years to stop smoking. Only vaping got them off sigarettes. So you better stop selling CRAP!

  10. Hey VICE how about you let the people that are doing the interviews do the intros? We don't care if it's in Chinese, we just don't want some lazy person to try to take even one bit of the hard work the people in China did and the reporter in this video SPOKE ENGLISH so why not?!?!

  11. Seems like alot of people from my area either stopped smoking period or stopped vaping and picked the cig back up …it seemed like everyone Vaped a year ago…now I hardly ever see it anymore.

  12. OOO a hit piece on chineses vapes..wonder which tobacco giant sponsored this episode..And no anti vape doco has ever produced any scientific study done because ther is only one that was done in germany and the study found no adverse effects……so all antivape psuedo pieces are propaganda or ignorace

  13. It may be trendy in china out here in the west people still look at you like you are a gay pussy if you vape.

And it isn't a marketing trick when companies say it can help you quit smoking, it helped me to quit and if you browse the internet you will find out I am not the only one.

The original e-cigarette was meant as a healthy alternative to regular cigarettes, I think there are a lot of lobbyists and other companies who like to demonise vaping claiming it is just as bad as tobacco and that you look silly and all that.

If you are smoking and want to quit then really give vaping a try and push yourself to do it instead of smoking.
If you dont smoke or vape stay away from it, and if you really want to try it and use it than vape the nicotene free e-juice.
Just be carefull with the vape you will use. STAY AWAY FROM THE REALLY CHEAP CHINA STUFF and let yourself be informed about what batteries to use and what not to do.

  14. I've noticed that in China vape pens are the trend, while here in the US it's mostly mod boxes… interesting…

  15. Chinese people are like Fish they all look the same and have a population of Billions and we don`t care if they get Killed.

  16. Smoked for fifteen years and very reluctantly switched to vaping. Went a year without a cigarette using the vape, tried to smoke for a couple weeks and went right back to the vape. Whatever people want to say about the product, I feel so much better using this than I ever did smoking.

  17. Last year i bought a chinese made tesla terminator clone for about 10 bucks with free liquid and battery and it taste like S-H-I-T

  18. Those american vendors had the most fucked up accents I've heard. Never heard that in America and im from the dirty south.

  19. 4:48 they have fans to blow the solder cool, but it just blows it onto them, that stuff isn't okay to breathe, the solder that is, (Vapes probably aren't either)
