Dr. Miles Day Discusses the Role of Interventional Pain Management

Pain management is the art of treating one of the
most common reasons somebody comes to see a physician, “Doctor, I hurt.” Well, we have to figure out, one: What type
of pain the patient is having and two: The best way to treat it. Pain management is the
field where if certain medications are not working, you have experts who do this 24x
7. They can help find out where the pain is coming from because not all pains
are the same. So, if you can find that where the pain is coming from or you
presume that pain is coming from, you can develop a treatment plan on how to treat
that pain that just doesn’t solely rely on medication because in pain management we
look at using medications, we are looking at functional restoration, we have to use
physical therapy. At the same time we have to think about how pain affects the
psyche. So, we bring our psychologist in to help patients address pain and then
there’s the interventional part of pain management which is procedures whether
they are injections or some more advanced stuff but trying to analyze it, figuring out where the pain is coming from,
using the appropriate medicines to treat that pain or procedures, and hopefully
providing that patient with relief enough to resume decent quality of life.
