Elyse’s Story | Beaumont Women’s Urology Center

ELYSE HAUSNER LOOKS NORMAL ON THE OUTSIDE,
BUT SHE HAS LIVED HER ENTIRE LIFE WITH WHAT SHE CALLS A HORRIBLE MEDICAL CONDITION. It?s
not a disease that people see. It?s a hidden thing. If you look at me, I?m perfectly healthy.
SINCE CHILDHOOD, ELYSE HAS HAD A NEUROGENIC BLADDER. My bladder just goes all the time.
It doesn?t understand. It?s not reading signals correctly. SHE SAYS SHE CAN?T GO ANYWHERE
WITHOUT KNOWING THERE?S A RESTROOM NEARBY. You don?t want to go out to dinner with your
friends. You don?t have to go on hikes. You don?t want to go on long car trips. This is
the kind of thing that reduces you to nothingness because it is just pure humiliation. HER JOB
AS A KINDERGARTEN TEACHER, SEEING HER STUDENTS, IS SOMETIMES WHAT GETS HER OUT OF BED ON DIFFICULT
DAYS. I am the one teacher in the universe who if you have to go to the bathroom, just
go. OVER THE YEARS SOME TREATMENTS HAVE WORKED FOR A LIMITED TIME, BUT NO MORE. AND THAT
MAKES TEACHING DIFFICULT. HER DOCTOR, HERE IN NEW YORK, RECENTLY FOUND NEW HOPE IN MICHIGAN.
I want to take a look at your back. ELYSE PACKED HER BAGS AND HEADED TO METRO DETROIT
FOR A PROCEDURE PIONEERED BY A DOCTOR AT BEAUMONT HOSPITAL WOMEN’S UROLOGY CENTER. The women
that we see are very challenging in that they have suffered a long time. And it?s had such
a negative impact on their quality of life. DURING THIS PROCEDURE, DR. KEN PETERS PLACES
A TINY ELECTRODE AT THE PUDENDAL NERVE IN THE PELVIS. IT EMITS A LOW LEVEL PULSE THAT
SENDS A MESSAGE TO THE BRAIN TO OVERRIDE ABNORMAL SIGNALS THAT CAUSE BLADDER PROBLEMS AND PELVIC
PAIN. THE PROCEDURE IS CALLED PUDENDAL NEUROMODULATION. What happens a lot in these patients who are
suffering from voiding dysfunction and pelvic pain is there is something wrong in that communication.
That the wrong signals are being sent through the nerves to those organs which lead to the
underlying problem. AFTER TWO WEEKS OF MEASURING THE IMPACT OF THE DEVICE ON ELYSE?S BLADDER,
SHE RETURNED TO THE OPERATING ROOM. THIS TIME, DR. PETERS IMPLANTED THE PERMANENT DEVICE
WHICH ACTS MUCH LIKE A HEART PACEMAKER, CONSTANTLY SENDING THOSE PULSES. THE HOPE IS TO GIVE
ELYSE RELIEF FOR YEARS TO COME. It really is an amazing when you make somebody better
when no one else has been able to help. I mean as a physIcian nothing feels better than
that. I feel like I have a life again. It?s been a dramatic difference. The urgent, incontinence
is almost completely gone. This is wonderful.
