Every Woman’s Life at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital

(soft music) – My name is Carrie Shaeffer
and I’m a social worker at Henrico Doctors’ in the cancer center, but I also manage a program
called Every Woman’s Life. And that is a partnership
between Henrico Doctors’ and the Virginia health
department, and its purpose is to provide women with
access to health screenings, like mammograms and pap smears,
which detect cancer early, breast cancer and cervical cancer. And it’s for women who can’t get access to those screenings otherwise. So, women who have no insurance and women who also meet
certain income requirements. Screenings are very quick and easy, and relatively painless for women. Women who are 40 and over would qualify for a mammogram and a pap smear. Women who are under 40,
but who have symptoms, such as a lump in their breast, or who’ve already had
an abnormal pap smear may need to get more tests, but all of those tests would
still be free for that woman. And if she were to be
diagnosed with cancer then she might be eligible for Medicaid, which would then help cover
all the costs of her treatment. Only a few women out of
every 1,000 women who has a mammogram is actually
diagnosed with breast cancer, and a very small percentage of women who have a pap smear are detected
to have an abnormality, but for those women that do, these tests can save their lives, because we catch the cancer early. So women who are interested
in Every Woman’s Life can just call our hotline
number which is (804) 200-7020, and they would speak
with me over the phone. They would do a quick, about
a five minute phone interview to see if they qualify,
and then we would set up all her tests here on the
campus of Henrico Doctors’. (soft music)
