Facing Stage 1 Triple-Negative Breast Cancer with Hope and Courage – Diana’s Story Part 2

married 35 years we have three rescue
dogs and we love to rescue animals we love food and wine and cocktails I like
to have fun I like to laugh I was diagnosed in January of 2015 with triple
negative stage 1 breast cancer there will be about 250,000 new cases of
breast cancer diagnosed this year in our country that’s about 800 women a day
that will be diagnosed with breast cancer it’s a big number the first time
that they tell you that you’re numb you’re absolutely numb all thought goes
out of your head the first thought I had was how am I
going to tell my husband this he’d been diagnosed 16 months before me that was a huge thing yeah and you worry
about everything will you be able to work how we gonna afford it who’s gonna
take care of the kids what happens if I get good test results and you don’t you
know how do you handle each other’s hurdles those are not easy things and
they face those with a lot of courage and yeah and humor I think that I think
being diagnosed early and being in charge of your health is extremely
important we felt that very much so and it’s why
we researched a lot about where we wanted to go and what kind of care we
wanted and I cannot recommend UC Health any higher I my husband and I
both have and continue to have incredible care they’ve taken the time
to get to know me they’re very friendly with you they’re very kind and it meant
a lot that they took such an interest and it made me feel comfortable it made
me feel like they knew me well enough to understand my treatment and what I
preferred what I wanted when a woman is first diagnosed with breast cancer it’s
very overwhelming and it is the goal of our team since we’re multidisciplinary
to provide treatment plans for the cancer that’s number one
but we also need to come up with a treatment plan that puts this as I often
say to my patients this cancer in your world
we don’t want cancer to be your world we want to put it in your world it is
extremely important to do mammograms it is your your first line of defense
along with self-exams it I can’t stress that anymore I do not have breast cancer
or any cancer in my family I’m an outlier and it found the the mammogram
was extremely important in finding my my cancer and the self exams are very
important I feel great I do I feel really good I am in four and a half
years in and at five years I will be considered in the same group as everyone
else triple negatives have a higher chance of recurrence in the first five
years and my doctors have been so happy with my progress
