How Do I Know if My Pregnancy is Progressing Normally?

How do I know if my pregnancy is progressing
normally? Week by week, the fetus gets bigger along
with your waistline. That doesn’t mean everything is fine. The average woman gains thirty to forty pounds
with the pregnancy, most of that in the third trimester. If you are not gaining weight,
it could be your diet – Or throwing up too much. Morning sickness is common, but you need to
offset it by drinking even more water. But it can cause many women not to gain weight
in the first trimester or even lose weight. That is not the ideal way to lose weight. In most pregnancies, morning sickness fades
at the end of the first trimester. That’s because it is a protective mechanism
to prevent you from eating foods with toxins or parasites while the baby’s organs are forming. If morning sickness fades earlier, not a problem,
if it is still going on into the second trimester, talk to the doctor. That’s the default advice everyone gives. If you are worried, talk to the doctor. They’ll
be able to diagnose anything that’s wrong or order major tests like a sonogram or blood
tests. They can’t fix everything. Did you know that the hormones of pregnancy
tend to make people more worrisome? This isn’t just hormones. If you are not gaining weight or losing weight,
overly anxious or heart beating fast, constantly thirsty or weak, the pregnancy may be causing
other hormone problems. I don’t have a thyroid problem, which makes
pregnancy really difficult. Or you may be developing prenatal diabetes,
which causes all kinds of symptoms and can end with a ten pound plus baby. Only after you’ve gained fifty to a hundred
pounds. This is why I was talking about average growth
of the abdomen and body weight as a rough proxy for how well the pregnancy is going. I wanted something else to go on. If you feel intense pain and heavy bleeding,
that’s a strong indicator something else is wrong. That is a symptom of a miscarriage. If you have intense pain for a moment but
no bleeding, it could be muscle strains or ligaments straining. If you have a little
bleeding but no pain, it could be nothing or evidence you had sex. If I feel like having sex, it is a sign that
I’m not having health problems. If you have standard pregnancy symptoms of
swollen ankles, fatigue and constipation, everything is fine. If they suddenly stop,
it is a problem. They usually stop with labor. They will also fail if you are having a miscarriage,
and you’ll be able to see it in a negative pregnancy test. So as long as the pregnancy continues, it
is fine. If you still feel the same plus a little bigger,
the pregnancy is progressing fine. Any sudden symptoms like one leg swollen more than the
other, pain that is bad and gets worse or anything unusual, talk to the doctor. And if everything is fine, I’ll talk to the
doctor at my next appointment.
