How to Do Chin-Ups | Sleek/Strong With Rachel Cosgrove


Hi, it’s Rachel Cosgrove for Sleek/Strong.
Today we’re gonna talk about chin-ups. Women can do chin-ups. We just have to work at it.
I’m gonna show you how to progress, using a band to get yourself to be able to do a
chin-up. Now a chin-up is one of the best exercises to really work your whole body.
You’re actually gonna feel really sore in your abs and your back, and you’re gonna build
really nice sleek, toned arms. So what you’re gonna do, you’re gonna find a chin-up bar.
And you’re gonna go ahead and go up to the chin-up bar. And at first –how to do a chin-up–
you’re gonna grab ahold of the bar, let your arms extend all the way down, as you hang.
And you’re gonna go ahead and pull, up to that bar. Now what you’re thinking about is
bringing those elbows to your sides and your chest toward the bar, really using your back
to do that chin-up. And I’m not kicking. I’m really using my stomach and my arms and my
back. What you’re gonna find is that your stomach is actually gonna be really sore from
doing these chin-ups. So if you’re not able to do those, we’re gonna go ahead and use
a band. Now I would suggest that you get multiple bands, all different thicknesses. The thicker
the band, the easier it’ll be. So we’re gonna go ahead and place the band around the bar,
moving it through. And we’re gonna do the same technique –with palms facing you– that’s
the easiest way to do a chin-up in the beginning. You’re gonna place that band right around
your knee to give you support. Grab ahold of the bar. Same thing: Hang from the bar,
fully extended, and then pull yourself up, right up to the bar, lowering back down, under
control. And again, up. Lowering, under control. Again, I’m thinking about pulling my elbows
to my sides and my chest up towards the bar, pulling that chin right over the bar. And
that’s how you do a chin-up. So next time you’re in the gym and you think: ‘I don’t
think I can do it’. Well, guess what? Use this progression to get yourself to do this
exercise, because it’s one of the best exercises to really shape your body. I’m Rachel Cosgrove
