Nipple discharge is a common problem among women, and this is mostly due to hormonal changes in a woman. It’s bilateral and it doesn’t really create any problem. When we get concerned is we have a unilateral one-sided
nipple discharge that is bloody and is consistent. That is the time that there
are a variety of ways that we can take care of it. We take that fluid and look at it under a microscope and try to make a diagnosis, or a surgeon would go and try to take that duct that
is involved with the production of the fluid and then we try to take a look at it. The
majority of them are benign entities, such as, we call it, intraductal papilloma, and are not really harmful. A small percentage of these cases, they are found to be again cancer, but they’re very low-grade cancer.
