Kansas City Week in Review – May 24, 2019

>>Nick: COMING UP:
SURELY THEY’RE KIDDING.
THEY’RE CALLING IT ONE OF THE
BIGGEST EVENTS IN THE HISTORY OF OUR CITY?
KC AWARDED THE NFL DRAFT.
WE SEPARATE THE FACT FROM THE
FICTION. PLUS: MISSOURIANS WAKING UP TO A
NEW ABORTION LAW AND THEY’RE
TAKING TO THE STREETS.
BUT ARE THERE SIGNS THIS WEEK THAT THE BAN IS ALREADY
UNRAVELING?
A COMEBACK FOR A DISGRACED
FORMER GOVERNOR. ANNUAL A MAN WHO WANTED TO BE
OUR GOVERNOR IS BACK IN THE
HEADLINES, BUT THE CHRIS KOBACH
REALLY ASKING TOO MUCH. AND WHAT ON EARTH IS HAPPENING
IN LEE’S SUMMIT?

KANSAS CITY WEEK IN REVIEW IS MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH THE
GENEROUS SUPPORT OF:

www.captionassociates.com WELCOME, EVERYONE.
I’M NICK HAINES, AND WE’RE ON A
30-MINUTE MISSION TO HELP YOU
CONNECT THE DOTS ON THE MOST IMPACTFUL STORIES OF THE WEEK IN
THIS PLACE WE CALL HOME.
ON THAT JOURNEY WITH US:
NATIONALLY SYNDICATED COLUMNIST WITH THE TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE,
MARY SANCHEZ.
FROM KMBC 9 NEWS CHIEF POLITICAL
REPORTER MICHEAL MAHONEY. TRACKING THE NEWS FROM BEHIND A
MICROPHONE AT KCMO TALK RADIO
PETE MUNDO.
AND FROM THE PAGES OF YOUR KANSAS CITY STAR DAVE HELLING.
IT MAY BE 80 DEGREES THIS
WEEKEND, BUT IT’S FEELING KINDA
DRAFTY IN KANSAS CITY. THE NFL DRAFT IS HEADING TO TOWN
IN 2023.
WHEN NASHVILLE HELD THE DRAFT IN
APRIL, THEY CLAIMED IT BROUGHT MORE VISITORS THAN ANY EVENT IN
THE HISTORY OF THE CITY.
BROADCAST AROUND THE WORLD IN A
RECORD 115 COUNTRIES, THE THREE-DAY SPORTS SPECTACLE DREW
A RECORD CROWD OF 600,000 AND
MORE THAN 47 MILLION TELEVISION
VIEWERS. BUT ARE WE REALLY TO BELIEVE THE
HYPE I’M SEEING IN SOME NEWS
STORIES THIS WEEK THAT THIS WILL
BE ONE OF THE BIGGEST EVENTS EVER IN KANSAS CITY?
MICHAEL MAHONEY?
>>Micheal: FIRST, LET’S
STIPULATE THAT THE NFL DRAFT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST HYPE ACTIONS
IN HISTORY.
IT’S A CREDIT TO THE NFL FOR
STROKING THIS THING UP. SECONDLY, BIG CREDIT TO KATHY
NELSON FOR GETTING THIS HERE.
YEAH, IT’S GOING TO BE AN
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BONANZA FOR KANSAS CITY, WHETHER THERE’S
600,000 PEOPLE, I DON’T KNOW.
BUT, YOU KNOW, IT WILL BRING
SOME OUT-OF-TOWNERS INTO TOWN AND IT WILL BE GOOD FOR KANSAS
CITY IN TERMS OF PEOPLE SPENDING
MONEY HERE, SO THAT’S A GOOD
THING.>>Nick: WHILE YOU ENGAGE SO
MUCH IN POLITICAL NEWS THESE
DAYS, YOU USED TO ACTUALLY WORK
FOR CBS SPORTS, PETE MUNDO. CAN WE SEPARATE THE MYTH FROM
THE REALITY ON THAT?
>>Pete: IT’S A BIG DEAL, REALLY
A THREE-DAY COMMERCIAL FOR A CITY.
THAT’S WHAT IT TURNS INTO.
NASHVILLE, YOU SAW IT LAST
MONTH. THEY HAD PEOPLE ALL THE WAY UP
AND DOWN BROADWAY.
IT’S INCREDIBLE.
YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT ALL FLOWS A MILE STRETCH OF PEOPLE THEY HAD.
IT’S AN IMPRESSIVE EVENT FOR ANY
CITY TO HOLD AND TO HAVE A
CHANCE TO DO IT AND SHOW OFF YOUR CITY TO THE ENTIRE COUNTRY,
THERE’S NO DOWN SIDE UNLESS THE
AIRPORT IS NOT FINISHED BY THEN.
>>Nick: IT’S NO COINCIDENCE THEY’RE COMING IN 2023, THE YEAR
THE AIRPORT IS SUPPOSED TO OPEN.
IT SEEMS LIKE A CLOSE CALL.
>>Mary: HOPEFULLY WE CAN KEEP THE TRAINS RUNNING ON TIME AND
GET THE AIRPORT OPEN.
IT DOES MATTER BECAUSE YOU HAVE
THAT MANY PEOPLE COMING IN AND OUT OF YOUR CITY AND HOW ARE
THEY GOING TO GET HERE?
THAT IS THE AIRPORT.
SOME CERTAINLY WILL DRIVE VIA I-70 AND 35 CUTTING THROUGH THE
REGION, BUT THE AIRPORT IS TEN
TACKLE.
>>Nick: I’VE HEARD SO MUCH ABOUT THE NUMBERS OF THE
HUNDREDS, TENS OF MILLIONS OF
DOLLARS THAT COME IN.
>>Dave: WE DON’T KNOW WHAT THE COMMITMENTS ARE, NICK, OR WHAT
THEY HAVE BEEN.
WE COVERED KANSAS CITY’S PURSUIT
OF THE 2016 REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION AND THERE WAS THAT
SORT OF TRADEOFF, TOO, YEAH, IT
WOULD BE FUN AND YOU GET YOUR
NAME IN THE HEADLINES. BY THE WAY, 90 BLOCKS ARE CLOSED
OFF FOR SIX WEEKS AND SECURITY
IS A PROBLEM.
I’M A LITTLE LESS IMPRESSED BY THE NFL DRAFT, I MUST SAY, THAN
SOME OF MY COLLEAGUES MIGHT BE.
IT’S LIKE WATCHING PAINT DRY.
I DON’T GET THE ATTRACTION AND THE IDEA THAT SOMEHOW AN NFL FAN
WOULD NOT KNOW KANSAS CITY
EXISTS EXCEPT FOR THE DRAFT IS
PROBABLY REALLY OUT THERE. I MEAN, OBVIOUSLY WE HAVE A
FRANCHISE HERE AND A GOOD
FRANCHISE, SO THE FANS KNOW
KANSAS CITY EXISTS. HAVING SAID THAT, IT’S FINE.
COME ON, LET’S HAVE FUN, SPEND
SOME MONEY.
YOU KNOW, GET YOUR — GET ON ESPN OR WHATEVER CHANNEL, ABC,
WHATEVER —
>>Nick: WE’RE GETTING A LOT OF
QUESTIONS FROM OUR VIEWERS AND I’D LOVE TO ANSWER THOSE.
WHY UNION STATION, WHICH IS
WHERE IT’S GOING TO TAKE PLACE?
WHY NOT THE POWER AND LIGHT DISTRICT, MICHAEL?
>>Micheal: I HAVE NO IDEA
EXCEPT THEY SAW WHAT HAPPENED
DOWN IN NASHVILLE AND FEEL LIKE THEY NEED TO — THE OTHER THING
I WANTED TO BRING UP FOR A
SECOND IS WHEN THEY HAD THIS
NEWS CONFERENCE ON THURSDAY, I BELIEVE, THE CITY OFFICIALS WERE
PRESSED ON HOW MUCH MONEY AND
THEY STEERED ABSOLUTELY AWAY
FROM THAT QUESTION. SO THEY DIDN’T WANT TO ANSWER
HOW MUCH THIS IS GOING TO TAKE.
THE CITY IS GOING TO BE PUTTING
SOME MONEY ON THE LINE. THEY WILL PROBABLY GO OUT FOR
CORPORATE SPONSORS, THAT’S FINE,
BUT I DO SHARE DAVE’S VIEW ON
THIS. YOU KNOW, I LIKE COLLEGE
FOOTBALL A LOT BETTER THAN I DO
PRO FOOTBALL AND I DON’T
RECOGNIZE MOST OF THE NAMES OF THESE GUYS THAT ARE DRAFTED.
I’M GLAD IT’S HERE, I’M GLAD
PEOPLE COME IN AND SPEND MONEY.
GOOD FOR THEM.>>Nick: MANY OF OUR VIEWERS ARE
MORE ENTHUSIASTIC THAN MICHAEL
MAHONEY AND DAVE HELLING.
JAN IN LEE’S SUMMIT SAYS, “NEXT UP, HOSTING A SUPER BOWL IN
KANSAS CITY.”
DOES HOSTING A DRAFT PUT YOU IN
BETTER SHAPE FOR HOSTING THE SUPER BOWL?
>>Pete: I THINK IT DOES, BUT
THE DRAWBACK FOR KANSAS CITY IS
YOU HAVE AN OUTDOOR STADIUM AND A PLACE WHERE IT’S IN THE 30s IN
JANUARY AND FEBRUARY.
THAT’S THE DRAWBACK.
IT’S A CHANCE FOR THE CITY TO SHOW OFF IT WAS THE
INFRASTRUCTURE TO MOVE AND HOLD
THIS TYPE OF — THIS MANY
HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE, BUT IN TERMS OF WHETHER OR NOT
IT HELPS YOU HOST A SUPER BOWL,
UNTIL THERE’S SOME TYPE OF DOME
HERE OR RETRACTABLE ROOF, THAT’S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN.
>>Nick: COULD THIS IGNITE A NEW
BI-STATE TAX CAMPAIGN TO FUND A
RETRACTABLE ROOF OVER ARROWHEAD STADIUM?
REMEMBER THAT CAMPAIGN FROM MORE
THAN A DECADE AGO?
ISN’T A ROOF CONSIDERED ONE OF THE PREREQUISITES FOR HOSTING
THE SUPER BOWL IN A COLD WEATHER
BUT TEN YEARS AGO, IT WAS NOT
VOTED ON AND THAT’S DID NOT HAPPEN.
IS THERE ANY SUGGESTION THAT WE
WOULD BE HEADING INTO A NEW
BY-STATE TAX NOW, MARY?>>Mary: I THINK THAT QUESTION
IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE OUT THERE.
WE ARE A METROPOLITAN REGION.
THE ISSUES THAT HAVE COME UP BEFORE IN TERMS OF GOVERNANCE
AND WHO’S IN CHARGE, THE
RELATIONSHIPS WERE NOT THERE
ACROSS THE STATE LINE. THAT COULD CHANGE.
I MEAN, WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A
NEW MAYOR.
YOU NEVER KNOW. IT’S STILL OUT THERE.
>>Nick: YOU WROTE A COLUMN
ABOUT THERE OR HAD AN EDITORIAL
RELATING TO THE FACT IT’S NOW TIME FOR KANSANS TO ACTUALLY BE
INVOLVE IN THE UPKEEP OF THE
SPORTS STADIUM.
WOULD THIS BE A WAY TO DOING IT?>>Dave: I DID NOT WRITE THAT
EDITORIAL, BUT I INFORMED THE
PERSON WRITING IT ABOUT SOME OF
THE INFORMATION CONTANELD IN IT. CONVERSATIONS ARE GOING ON ALL
OVER KANSAS CITY AND JACKSON
COUNTY NOW ABOUT THE FUTURE OF
BOTH STADIUMS, WHETHER THE ROYALS MIGHT COME DOWNTOWN, WHAT
MIGHT HAPPEN WITH THE CHIEFS,
WHO WOULD PAY FOR IT, HOW IT
WOULD WORK. I DO THINK THERE’S AN
UNDERSTANDING, THE LEASE IS
EXPIRING IN A LITTLE MORE THAN A
DECADE, BUT I MAY TAKE THAT LONG TO PUT A FINANCING MECHANISM IN
PLACE.
IT WILL BE BILLIONS TO DOLLARS
TO BUILD NEW ITEMS IF THAT’S THE DECISION AND YOU HAVE TO START
THINKING ABOUT THAT NOW.
WHETHER THERE DRAFT PROGRAM
GOOSES THAT CONVERSATION ALONG, I DON’T KNOW.
PEOPLE ARE VERY SERIOUSLY
LOOKING AT THIS, NICK.
WE’RE SOME WAYS FROM A DECISION.>>Pete: IF THERE’S GOING TO BE
A DISCUSSION ABOUT ANOTHER
BI-STATE TAX IN OUR METROPOLITAN
AREA, I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE GOING TO SAY THAT STACKS
OUGHT TO BE ON — TAX OUGHT TO
BE ON TRANSIT AND
TRANSPORTATION, RATHER THAN BUILDING A DOME FOR A SPORTS
STADIUM AND THERE WILL BE
PUSHBACK ON THAT FOR A VERY
REASON.>>Dave: OR A DOWNTOWN BASEBALL
STADIUM OR ANY OF IT.
PEOPLE WILL SAY THERE’S —
>>BOTH CANDIDATES FOR MAYOR SAID THEY’RE NOT GOING TO
SUPPORT A TAX FOR THE ROYALS TO
MOVE DOWNTOWN, SO THAT’S PART OF
THIS AS WELL. BI-STATE, I THINK THE APPETITE
FOR THE PUBLIC TO PAY
BILLIONAIRES TO BUILD THEIR OWN
STADIUM IS NOT THERE AND THAT’S ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
THAT’S NOT JUST KANSAS CITY.
>>PETE, YOU KNOW AS WELL AS I
DO AND PROBABLY BETTER, THAT’S WHAT THE CANDIDATES SAY NOW.
WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVE IN
SEVEN OR EIGHT YEARS WHEN IT’S
ON THE TABLE FOR A SERIOUS DISCUSSION, MIGHT BE A VERY
DIFFERENT RESPONSE.
>>Nick: WE’LL KEEP THE TAPE.
THE NFL DRAFT WILL BE AT UNION STATION.
THAT’S WHERE ALMOST THE ENTIRE
KCPT CREW WILL BE THIS SUNDAY
EVENING FOR WHAT IS ACTUALLY THE BIGGEST EVENT OF OUR CALENDAR
YEAR.
IT IS THE CELEBRATION AT THE
STATION WITH THE KANSAS CITY SYMPHONY.
EXPERIENCE IT LIVE ON YOUR LAWN
CHAIR OR PICNIC BLANKET, OR FROM
THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME AS KCPT BROADCASTS IT LIVE SUNDAY
EVENING AT 8:00.
WEATHER PERMITTING, OF COURSE.
NO GUARANTEES THE WEATHER WILL COOPERATE.
WE KNOW ALL ABOUT THAT THIS
WEEK.
MANY OF YOUR FELLOW KANSAS CITIANS CLEANING UP SOGGY
BASEMENTS FROM A DELUGE OF RAIN.
IT WAS A WEEK THAT ALSO SAW
DEADLY STORMS WHIP THROUGH MISSOURI, KILLING THREE AND
CAUSING MASSIVE DAMAGE IN THE
STATE’S CAPITAL JEFFERSON CITY.
RESPONDING TO THE DEVASTATION WAS THE TOP PRIORITY OF MISSOURI
GOVERNOR MIKE PARSON.
FOR A FEW DAYS AT LEAST, IT
PUSHED THE DEBATE OVER ABORTION IN MISSOURI OFF THE FRONT PAGE
AND FROM THE NIGHTLY NATIONAL
NEWSCASTS THAT HAVE BEEN
COVERING WHAT IS NOW ONE OF THE MOST RESTRICTIVE ABORTION BANS
IN THE COUNTRY.
IT BLOCKS WOMEN FROM TERMINATING
THEIR PREGNANCY AT EIGHT WEEKS WITH NO EXCEPTIONS FOR RAPE AND
INCEST.
IT PROMPTED THOUSANDS OF
MISSOURI RESIDENTS TO TAKE TO THE STREETS IN PROTEST,
INCLUDING HERE IN KANSAS CITY
WHERE A LARGE CROWD GATHERED ON
THE COUNTRY CLUB PLAZA.>>TERRIFIED FOR MY CORE BECAUSE
I CAN’T STAND THE IDEA OF NOT
HAVING CONTROL OVER ME, ABOUT
NOT BEING A PERSON.>>HONESTLY, IT’S INFURIATING
MORE THAN ANYTHING.
I JUST DON’T FEEL LIKE IT’S
THEIR BUSINESS OR THEIR PLACE.>>Nick: MANY OF THESE
PROTESTERS BEGGING GOVERNOR MIKE
PARSONS NOT TO SIGN THE MEASURE,
BUT JUST BEFORE WE START THIS PROGRAM FRIDAY MORNING, THE
GOVERNOR HAS SIGNED THE LAW,
MICHAEL.
>>Micheal: AND IT’S NOT SURPRISED HE SIGNED THE LAW
BECAUSE HE INDICATED WHEN THE
DEBATE WAS COMING DOWN THE HOME
STRETCH IN THE LEGISLATURE LAST WILDCAT
WEEK, THAT HE SUSPENDS SUPPORTED
IT, AND ALTHOUGH HE DID NOT SAY
HE WILL AT THE TIME, HE GAVE EVERY EDUCATION THAT HE WOULD
SIGN IT.
THIS COMES AGAINST THE BACKDROP
THAT A HUGE DONOR IN POLITICS, DAVID HUMPHREYS, WENT PUBLIC AND
SAID THIS BILL IS GOING TO BE
HARMFUL TO MISSOURI WOMEN.
THIS BILL, LACK OF AN EXCEPTION FOR RAPE OR INCEST IS BAD PUBLIC
POLICY.
HE DIDN’T THINK THAT THE
POLITICIANS THOUGHT THEIR WAY THROUGH IT.
I THOUGHT THAT THEY WOULD THINK
DIFFERENTLY IF IT WAS THEIR WIFE
OR THEIR DAUGHTER, AND HE URGED GOVERNOR PARSON TO VETO THE
BILL.
THAT DID NOT LAP.
I THINK THAT THIS — DID NOT HAPPEN.
I THINK THIS BILL, HB-126, THE
HEARTBEAT BILL, IS GOING TO BE A
CAMPAIGN ISSUE IN MISSOURI IN PARSON’S RE-ELECT, OR HIS
ELECTION.
>>Nick: THAT WASN’T THE ONLY
PERSON IN THIS, WE HAD THE PRESIDENT THIS WEEK SAYING, YES,
HE’S PRO LIFE, BUT ZO BELIEVE
THERE SHOULD BE AN EXCEPTION FOR
RAPE AND INCEST. NOW WE HAVE TWO AND GELS.
THE TOP OF THE REPUBLICAN TICK
AND ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL
DONORS SAYING THEY’RE AGAINST IT.
>>Mary: ABSOLUTELY, AND I DON’T
THINK THEY REALIZE WHAT THEY
HAVE IGNITED HERE. WOMEN AND MY AGE AND YOUNGER DO
NOT REMEMBER A WORLD WHERE
ROE V. WADE DIDN’T EXIST, WHERE
ABORTION WASN’T LEGAL, SO EVEN VERY CONSERVATIVE WOMEN, WE
DISCUSS THIS ALL THE TIME.
WOMEN TALK ABOUT REPRODUCTION
ISSUES, THEY TALK ABOUT FERTILITY AMONGST THEMSELVES.
THEY’VE HAD VERY NUANCED
CONVERSATIONS ABOUT ABORTION
PRETTY MUCH THEIR ENTIRE LIVES AS ROE V. WADE WAS LEGAL.
TO COMPLETELY TAKE THAT AWAY AND
UP-END, THAT IS A WORLD THAT
MOST WOMEN DO NOT WANT TO SEE. THEY JUST DON’T, AND I DON’T
THINK THAT THESE POLITICIANS
REALIZE HOW BIG A PUSHBACK
THEY’RE GOING TO GET, EVEN FROM CONSERVATIVE WOMEN.
>>Nick: IT WAS INTERESTING TO
ME THAT WHEN I SAW THE FOLKS
PROTESTING SO MANY PEOPLE, YOU SAW THE SIGNS, SOME OF THE
THINGS THAT WERE SAID WAS, WOW,
WE HAD NO IDEA THIS WAS
HAPPENING, IT TOOK US BY SURPRISE.
AND WE’RE SEEING EMAIL BLASTS
BACK IN FEBRUARY ABOUT THIS.
IS THIS ABOUT THE FACT THAT PEOPLE DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO
WHAT HAPPENS IN STATE POLITICS?
THEY’RE SO FIX SXATEED ON WHAT
HAPPENS IN — FIXATED ON WHAT HAPPENED IN WASHINGTON?
>>SOME OF THAT.
ABORTION COMES UP EVERY YEAR,
NICK, BUT HERE’S A THING TO KEEP IN MIND.
DAVID HUMPHREY WHO OPPOSED THE
BILL AS OF YESTERDAY, MIGHT SEEK
TO PUT THIS ON THE BALLOT IN 2020.
HE COULD DO A PETITION DRIVE AND
PUT IT ON THE BALLOT.
IN KANSAS, THERE WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY BE A PUSH TO BUT
ABORTION ON THE BALLOT IN 2020
AS A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT
BECAUSE OF THE COURT DECISION. YOU COULD HAVE TWO PUBLIC VOTES
ON THIS MOST AGGRESSIVE ISSUE
MAYBE IN MY LIFETIME, THAT WILL
BE A FASCINATING DEVELOPMENT IN 2020 WHEN, BY THE WAY, WE’LL
ALSO BE PICKING A PRESIDENT.
>>Nick: FOR ALL THE INDIGNATION
ABOUT THE ISSUE, PETE, I NOTICE MIKE PARSON WILL HAVING TO RUN
FOR GOVERNOR IN HIS FIRST
ELECTION NEXT YEAR.
NO HIGH PROFILE DEMOCRAT HAS STEPPED FORWARD AT THIS POINT TO
SAY I’M GOING TO TAKE YOU ON.
>>Pete: I THINK THAT’S THE CASE
OF THE FACT THAT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAS NO BENCH RIGHT NOW IN
MISSOURI.
WITH THE POPULIST WAVE IN THE
LAST FEW YEARS, THE DEMOCRATIC BENCH IS GONE.
IT IS SOLIDLY REPUBLICAN OUTSIDE
OF THE ATTORNEY — NICOLE
GALLOWAY, SO SHE’S THE ONLY DEMOCRAT AND I THINK SHE’S
SAVING HERSELF PROBABLY FOR
2022, MAYBE A SENATE RUN AGAINST
ROY BLUNT OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
SO THERE’S NOBODY THERE.
SLY JAMES HAS ZERO CHANCE,
CLAIRE McCASKILL HAD A FULL CAREER, HER HUSBAND IS SICK
RIGHT NOW.
THERE’S NO PATHWAY THERE I SEE
FOR HER. SO WHO IS THAT PERSON?
>>GALLOWAY WILL BE THERE, PETE,
AND SO WILL DAWN SIFTON, A STATE
SENATOR FROM ST. LOUIS.>>Nick: SHE’S GOING TO BE
THERE?
>>I FEEL VERY CONFIDENT ABOUT
IT. THERE’S ALSO SOME DYNAMICS
PLAYING OUT WITHIN THE MISSOURI
REPUBLICAN PARTY THAT THERE ARE
PEOPLE WHO DO NOT LIKE GOVERNOR FAR SON BECAUSE HE SUPPORTED THE
GAS TAX HIKE.
HIS INFRASTRUCTURE BILL REQUIRES
GOVERNMENT BORROWING AND PEOPLE BEHIND HIS BACK WILL CALL HIM
TAX HIKE MIKE.
I DON’T KNOW THAT THERE’S GOING
TO BE A PRIMARY, BUT I DON’T KNOW THAT THERE WON’T BE ONE.
THE REPUBLICANS, AS YOU WELL
KNOW, ONCE THEY REBUILD THEIR
OFFICE AFTER THE TORNADO STRIKE IN JEFFERSON CITY, WILL DO
EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO AVOID
THIS, BUT AS WE SAID EARLIER,
THERE IS GOING TO BE AN ELECTION YEAR ISSUE.
I THINK GALLOWAY IS GOING TO RUN
AND I THINK SHE’S GOING TO RUN
ON THIS ISSUE.>>AND ON TOP OF THAT, JUST TO
ADD TO IT, PARSON, THERE’S NOT
THAT PRIMARY CHALLENGER, BUT
THIS BILL WITH THE ABORTION BILL, THAT MAY ACTUALLY IN SOME
WAYS HELP HIM WITH THE
CONSERVATIVE BASE THAT MAY NOT
LIKE SOME OF HIS TAX POLICY IDEAS.
>>Nick: THERE WAS SPECULATION
YOU MAY RECALL THAT FORMER
MISSOURI GOVERNOR ERIC GREITENS WAS INTERESTED IN GETTING HIS
JOB BACK AND TAKING ON PARSON.
THIS WEEK WE LEARN WHAT GREITENS
IS GOING TO DO. HE’S JOINING THE NAVY.
THE FORMER GOVERNOR SAYS HE’S
ALSO WORKING ON A NEW BOOK WHICH
IS EXPECTED TO BE RELEASED LATER THIS YEAR.
DOES THAT PUT AN END TO HIS
DESIGNS ON A FUTURE POLITICAL
RUN? OR IS THIS IS A SIGN HE’S TRYING
TO REINVENT HIMSELF IN
PREPARATION FOR A FUTURE
CAMPAIGN?>>Mary: I THINK HE WANTED TO
RECOAT HIMSELF IN THE VENEER OF
BEING A NAVY SEAL AND THEY HAVE
TAKEN THAT AWAY FROM HIM. THEY’RE NOT GOING TO ALLOW HIM
TO HAVE THAT ACTIVE SERVICE, TO
HAVE THAT ROLE.
WHAT IS HE GOING TO DO NOW?>>Nick: SOME PEOPLE ARE
OUTRAGED WHY HE COULD EVEN BE
ACCEPTED BACK INTO THE MILITARY,
BUT HE WASN’T ACTUALLY CONVICTED OF ANYTHING.
>>AND TO MARY’S POINT, HE’S 45
YEARS OLDS A HE’S A YOUNG MAN IN
POLITICS. YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE TWO PEOPLE
RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT, PROBABLY
COMBINED 150.
HE COULD TAKE FIVE YEARS TO REBRAND HIMSELF AND IN THIS
TODAY’S POLITICAL CLIMATE, HE’S
GOOD.
>>BUT HE HAS BURNED SO MANY BRIDGES IN MISSOURI POLITICS,
NOT BECAUSE HE WAS FORCED TO
RESIGN OR THE AFFAIR HE ADMITTED
TO BUT WASN’T CONVICTED OF OR THE QUESTIONABLE FINANCING OF
HIS CAMPAIGN.
HE BURNED SO MANY BRIDGES INSIDE
OF THE PARTY BY CALLING THE REPUBLICANS CAREER POLITICIANS
AND SUGGESTING THAT THEY WERE
LESS THAN HONEST, AND SO ONE OF
THE REASONS HE GOT IN A PICKLE HE DID LAST YEAR WAS NOBODY IN
THE MISSOURI REPUBLICAN PARTY
STOOD UP AND EFFECTIVELY TRIED
TO DEFEND HIM AND THAT WAS WHEN HE WAS A SITTING GOVERNOR.
IN LIGHT OF THIS WHEN HE COMES
BACK IN ’20, IF HE DECIDES TO DO
THIS, OR 2022 AGAINST ROY BLUNT, WHICH IS MARGINAL BECAUSE BLUNT
COULD STILL RUN FOR RE-ELECTION,
IT’S NOT GOING TO BE THE JUG
GATHER NAUGHT OF GREITENS WE SAW IN 2016.
>>FIRST OF ALL, THE NAVY DIDN’T
HAVE TO LET HIM BACK IN
REGARDLESS OF WHETHER HE WAS CONVICTED OR NOT AND THERE IS
ENORMOUS PUSHBACK TODAY TO TELL
THE NAVY, HEY, THIS IS THE KIND
OF GUY YOU DON’T NEED IN THE ACTIVE RESERVE RANKS.
THE SECOND THING IS, PETE IS
RIGHT, THERE’S NO DEMOCRATIC
BENCH IN MISSOURI, BUT TIME HAS A WAY OF WORKING THESE THINGS
OUT.
THERE WAS NO BENCH IN KANSAS AND
YET THERE’S A DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR TODAY AND THERE’S A
DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSWOMAN IN THE
THIRD DISTRICT TODAY PRECISELY
BECAUSE THE CANDIDATES NOMINATED BY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WERE A
CONCERN.
I WOULDN’T COUNT THE DEMOCRATS
OUT NOW BEFORE NEXT YEAR’S ELECTION OR 2020.
>>Nick: WE’VE ALL GONE TO JOB
INTERVIEWS AND CHANCES ARE GOOD
WE PROBABLY ASKED ABOUT THE HEALTH BENEFITS, THE VACATION
POLICY, WOULD WE GET FREE
PARKING?
SO IS THERE ANYTHING WRONG IN BEING CLEAR ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT?
SAY ASKING FOR A PRIVATE JET,
ALL WEEKENDS OFF, AND A PROMISE
YOU’LL BE PROMOTED WITHIN A YEAR?
THOSE WERE THREE OF THE DEMANDS
THE NEW YORK TIMES CLAIMS FORMER
KANSAS SECRETARY OF STATE KRIS KOBACH MADE AS HE WAS BEING
CONSIDERED FOR A JOB AS
PRESIDENT TRUMP’S NEW
IMMIGRATION CZAR. HE ALSO WANTED WALK-IN
PRIVILEGES TO THE OVAL OFFICE
AND A GUARANTEE HE WOULD BE
NAMED HEAD OF HOMELAND SECURITY BY THE END OF THE YEAR.
IS THAT SO UNREASONABLE?
AND PERHAPS MORE IMPORTANTLY, IS
IT REAL? PETE?
>>Pete: I DON’T KNOW.
I MEAN, I TAKE IT AN IS BEING
REAL. I REACHED OUT TO CHRIS
PERSONALLY EARLIER THIS WEEK
WHEN THIS CAME OUT, FIGURING,
HEY, IF THIS IS FAKE NEWS AS THE PERSON THAT HE HOPE WAS GOING TO
BE HIS BOSS WOULD SAY, HE WOULD
AT LEAST LET ME KNOW, AND
UNFORTUNATELY, I DID NOT HEAR ANYTHING BACK.
SO IF IT WAS ONE OF THOSE
REPORTS THAT WAS TOTALLY
ERRONEOUS, I THINK ELT BE OUT THERE FIGHT — HE WOULD BE OUT
THERE FIGHTING IT AND THAT’S HOW
I HAVE TO LOOK AT IT RIGHT NOW.
>>Nick: AND HE’S NEVER MENTIONED THIS ON TWITTER
EITHER.
>>HERE’S THE THING AND FORGIVE
ME ON INSIDE BASEBALL, BUT EVERYBODY AROUND THE TABLE WILL
UNDERSTAND THIS.
THIS WAS A LEAK FROM THE WHITE
HOUSE, FROM THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION TO THE NEW YORK
TIMES IN PARTICULAR, THE HATED
NEW YORK TIMES, AND THEY
DELIBERATELY WENT OUT TO SCUTTLE KOBACH ON THIS.
ONE OF THE REASONS BEHIND, THIS
AS I UNDERSTAND IT, WAS THAT
MR. TRUMP, THE PRESIDENT AND THE WHITE HOUSE POLITICAL ARMY IN
GENERAL, WERE VERY UNHAPPY WITH
THE RESULTS IN KANSAS.
NOT ONLY DID HE LOSE, BUT HE LOST BADLY AND HE RAN A POOR
CAMPAIGN AND THE KOBACH CAMPAIGN
AS I UNDERSTAND IT, SUGGESTED TO
THE WHITE HOUSE AND ANOTHER POLITICAL ARM THAT WE’RE OKAY
OUT HERE.
WE’RE GOING TO TAKE CARE OF
THIS. AND IT DIDN’T HAPPEN.
HE GOT STOMPED AND NOW THIS LEAK
COMES OUT, CLEARLY FROM THE
WHITE HOUSE, TO SCUTTLE HIM. IT’S VERY, VERY INTERESTING AND
I THINK IT TELLS A LOT ABOUT
WHAT MAY NOT BE HAPPENING IN THE
FUTURE.>>Nick: LAST NIGHT
COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR FOR KRIS
KOBACH’S CAMPAIGN FOR GOVERNOR,
SAYS HE WILL NOW FOR SENATE.>>HE VERY LIKELY MIGHT.
CHRIS WILL NOT GIVE UP.
HE’S A VERY SMART MAN, HE’S VERY
DILIGENT. I THOUGHT THIS SOUNDED VERY
UNLIKE CHRIS IN SOME WAYS,
EXCEPT FOR THE PORTION ABOUT
WANTING TO COME BACK TO HIS FAMILY.
I KNOW HE’S VERY DEDICATED TO
HIS FAMILY, BUT HE’S NOT
GRANDIOSE IN THESE DAYS. HE IS IN TERMS OF WHAT HE THINKS
HE CAN ACCOMPLISH AND DO OUTSIDE
OF THE CONSTITUTION, PARE IN
REGARDS TO THE — PARTICULARLY IN REGARDS TO THE BORDER, BUT
IT’S AN ODD THING —
>>Nick: YOU THOUGHT IT WAS A
LITTLE FISHY?>>Mary: VERY FISHY AND A
NON-THING, BUT IT HAS DONE
EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANTED IT TO
DO. IT PUT THE KIBOSH ON HIM
BECOMING THE NEXT HOMELAND
SECURITY CHIEF.
THAT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.>>Nick: THE WOMAN WHO DEFEATED
KOBACH IN THE RACE TO BE
GOVERNOR OF KANSAS, IS NOW IN
THE HOT SEAT HERSELF THIS WEEK. LAURA KELLY IS BEING BLASTED BY
REPUBLICANS FOR VETOING A TAX
CUT PLAN THAT WOULD HAVE ALSO
REDUCED THE SALES TAX ON FOOD. SHE’S ALSO FACED WITH NEW
HEADLINES ABOUT THE STATE
KEEPING FOSTER KIDS IN OFFICES
OVERNIGHT, SOMETHING SHE PROMISED TO CORRECT WHILE
RUNNING FOR THE JOB.
IT’S ONE THING FOR KELLY TO
CLAIM SHE CAN’T GET A LOT OF THINGS DONE DUE TO REPUBLICAN
OPPOSITION, BUT IS IT HARDER FOR
THE NEW GOVERNOR TO ESCAPE BLAME
FOR FAILING TO FIX THE FATE OF FOSTER CHILDREN, IN A GOVERNMENT
DEPARTMENT SHE CONTROLS?
>>YES, AND IT’S A PROBLEM THAT
SHE NEEDS TO SEE FIXED AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.
SOME OF THE PROBLEM SHE
INHERITED FROM THE REPUBLICAN
ADMINISTRATION HAVE NOT BEEN FIXED DURING HER FIRST FOUR OR
FIVE MONTHS IN OFFICE, INCLUDING
THE FOSTER CHILDREN SYSTEM AS
YOU POINT OUT, THE CORRECTIONS PROBLEMS STILL EXIST, THE STATE
BUDGET STILL TEETERS A LITTLE
BIT.
I DO THINK SHE’S FACING — FIRST OF ALL, IT WAS VERY CLEAR SHE
WAS GOING TO VETO THE TAX CUT
BILL AND FOR REPUBLICANS TO
CLAIM, HEY, WE COVER CUT SALES TAXES ON — COULD HAVE CUT SALES
TAXES ON FOOD IS EXTRAORDINARILY
DISINGENUOUS SINCE HAD THEY
PASSED A SIMPLE CUT IN THE SALES TAX ON FOOD, SHE MIGHT HAVE
SIGNED IT.
THIS WAS LARGELY ABOUT CORPORATE
TAX CUTS IN THE STATE OF KANSAS. THEY TACKED ON FOOD AS A
POLITICAL TALKING POINT, THE
VETO WAS EXPECTED, AND I DON’T
THINK THEY’LL BE ABLE TO OVERRIDE IT.
>>AND TO DDVE’S POINT, YOU TALK
ABOUT POLITICAL EXPEDIENCE.
YOU HAVE SUSAN WAGLE, THE SENATE PRESIDENT, PROBABLY RUNNING FOR
THE 2020 SEAT, SO THERE’S ANGLES
INVOLVED TO WHAT HAPPENED BEYOND
JUST PASSING A BILL IN 2019. THEY’RE LOOKING LADY AHEAD TO —
LOOKING AHEAD TO THEIR OWN
POTENTIAL POLITICAL FUTURE.
>>Nick: NEXT UP WE HEAD TO MISSOURI AND THE LEE’S SUMMIT
SCHOOL DISTRICT WHERE WE ASK,
WHAT ON EARTH IS HAPPENING?
IS THEIR FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN SUPERINTENDENT ABOUT TO PACK HIS
BAGS AND LEAVE?
DENNIS CARPENTER SAYS HE’S READY
TO QUIT AFTER THE SCHOOL BOARD FOR A SECOND TIME TURNS DOWN HIS
REQUEST TO SPEND MONEY ON A
DIVERSITY PROGRAM.
CARPENTER WANTS $97,000 TO HIRE AN OUTSIDE FIRM THAT WILL OFFER
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION TRAINING
FOR STAFF.
ONE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER CLAIMED CARPENTER WAS ONLY IN THE
DISTRICT TO HELP BLACK STUDENTS.
WHAT ARE WE TO MAKE OF THIS
LATEST SPAT? DIDN’T THE SCHOOL BOARD KNOW
WHAT THEY WERE GETTING WHEN THEY
HIRED CARPENTER FROM THE HICKMAN
MILLS DISTRICT LESS THAN TWO YEARS AGO?
I NOTICE EVEN HIS TWITTER HANDLE
IS EQUITY SUPERINTENDENT 1.
>>THEY SHOULD HAVE KNOWN. AND TO — I ACTUALLY AM A
GRADUATE OF HICKMAN MILLS WHERE
HE CAME FROM.
I THINK WHEN YOU TRY AND COME IN AS A NEW SUPERINTENDENT, AND HE
IS STILL A NEW SUPERINTENDENT,
IT TAKES TIME TO BUILD TRUST,
RELATIONSHIPS. HE DID NOT HAVE THAT YET.
THE ISSUES THAT HE’S TRYING TO
DEAL WITH ARE VERY DEEP.
NOT IN TERMS OF THE LEASE SUMMIT WHERE SOME OF MY — LEE’S SUMMIT
WHERE SOME OF MY FAMILY LIVES IS
A HORRIBLY RACIST COMMUNITY, I
DON’T THINK IT IS, BUT THESE ARE VERY DIFFICULT ISSUES.
YOU THROW OUT TERMS LIKE WHITE
PRIVILEGE, WHICH MOST PEOPLE
DON’T EVEN UNDERSTAND, YOU CAN’T DO THIS IN THIS OPEN PUBLIC
SPACE, AND UNFORTUNATELY, YOU’RE
SEEING THINGS PLAY OUT WITH
THE — THE KANSAS CITY STAR WITH A VERY GOOD JOB WRITING THESE
PIECES, BUT THE NUANCES —
>>Nick: BUT THE FACT THAT WE
SEE AFRICAN AMERICAN PARENTS IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT ALSO SAYING
THEY’RE NOT HAPPY ABOUT THIS,
BUT IF IT’S ABOUT CLOSING THE
ACHIEVEMENT GAP, IS THIS THE STRAIGHTEST WAY TO GET HERE?
>>MARY BRINGS UP A VERY
IMPORTANT POINT THAT MUST NOT BE
FORGOTTEN. THIS IS A MULTI-LAYERED STORY,
THERE ARE A WHOLE BUNCH OF
NUANCES TO IT.
THIS IS NOT SIMPLY BLACK MEMBERS ON THE SCHOOL BOARD VERSUS WHITE
MEMBERS ON THE SCHOOL BOARD.
THERE IS — THE PEOPLE I’M
TALKING TO BELIEVE THERE IS A NEED FOR AN EQUITY STUDY THERE
AND THAT IT SHOULD GO FORWARD
AND IT’S NOT SIMPLY, NO PUN
INTENDED, A BLACK AND WHITE ISSUE IN ANY RESPECT.
IT IS MULTI-LAYERED AND PEOPLE
SHOULD WATCH THIS AND WATCH THE
FINAL REPORTING MARY JUST REFERRED TO AND WATCH THE STORY
CLOSELY BECAUSE IT IS NOT ALWAYS
WHAT IT SEEMS.
THERE ARE A LOT OF LAYERS.>>Nick: OKAY, WE’LL KEEP
WATCHING IT.
THE VERY FIRST TV AD IN THE RACE
FOR KANSAS CITY MAYOR WENT ON THE AIR THIS WEEK.
IT’S FROM JOLIE JUSTUS.
SHE MAY NEED THAT EXTRA
ATTENTION. A NEW POLL JUST RELEASED SHOWS
HER OPPONENT QUINTON LUCAS
MAINTAINING A STRONG LEAD.
HE’S UP 8 POINTS. WHAT WAS INTERESTING TO ME IS
THAT 32% ARE UNDECIDED.
THAT’S ACTUALLY HIGHER THAN THE
LAST POLL. HOW CAN IT BE?
>>ALL RIGHT, NOW YOU HAVE TWO
CANDIDATES THAT HAVE A LOT MORE
SIM LAYERS THAN THEY DO — SIMILARITIES THAN THEY DO
DIFFERENCES.
OUR FIRST DEBATE, QUINTON LUCAS
TOOK A COUPLE OF SHOTS, FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORD, AT JOLIE
JUSTICE WHEN IT COMES TO THE
AIRPORT.
THOSE HAVE PICKED UP IN THE STAR THE LAST COUPLE WEEKS, BUT
THAT’S THE ONLY DRAMA RIGHT NOW
I’M SEEING AROUND THESE TWO
CANDIDACIES.>>Nick: BUT WITH MORE
ATTENTION, YOU WOULD THINK THERE
WOULD BE MORE PEOPLE UNDECIDED.
>>HERE’S THE THING. I’VE GONE TO ALL THESE FORUMS MY
PARTNER HERE, MR. HELLING, HAS
DONE A GREAT JOB ORGANIZING AND
WHEN THEY’RE OVER, A LOT OF PEOPLE SAY AFTERWARDS, NOT
EVERYBODY, BUT THERE ARE LOTS OF
LITTLE CONVERSATIONS, THREE AND
FOUR PEOPLE, AND I TRIED TO JOIN SOME OF THESE CONVERSATIONS.
SOME PEOPLE PICK A SIDE ON THIS
AND PICK A CANDIDATE, BUT AS
THAT POLL REFLECTS, THERE ARE STILL A LOT OF PEOPLE STILL
KICKING THE TIRES ON THIS AND
TWO THINGS — ONE THING WILL
HAPPEN ON THIS. IF THE UNDECIDED REMAINS HIGH,
THE GENERAL POLITICAL DYNAMIC IS
ABOUT HALF OF THOSE PEOPLE WILL
JUST SAY I CAN’T MAKE UP MY MIND, I WON’T VOTE.
THE OTHER HALF WILL PICK A
FIGHT.
BUT I DO THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE STILL KICKING THE TIRES.
>>JUST QUICKLY, THE CHALLENGE
FOR BOTH CANDIDATES IN THE FINAL
MONTHS IS TO TAKE THAT 32% UNDECIDED AND MAKE THEM DECIDE
ON A CANDIDATE, AND I BELIEVE
THE FIRST CANDIDATE WHO GIVES
THE ELECTORATE A REASON TO VOTE FOR THEM WILL GET THE MAJORITY
OF THOSE VOTES AND BE THE NEXT
MAYOR.
THAT’S THE CHALLENGE IN THE NEXT MONTH, NICK.
SOMEONE HAS TO STAND OUT.
>>SOMEONE NEED TO DIFFERENT
RATE THEMSELVES AND STAND OUT — DIFFERENTIATE THEMSELVES AND
STAND OUT AS EITHER THE MORE
PROGRESSIVE CANDIDATE —
>>THE CANDIDATE WHO’S GOING TO PUT A ROLLING ROOF OVER
ARROWHEAD STADIUM.

  1. Micheal Mahoney and Dave Helling are clueless on how big hosting the NFL Draft is. Kansas City hosting the NFL Draft is just as big as hosting the MLB All-Star game; if not bigger. Yes, Dave Helling, NFL fans know about Kansas City because we have a franchise here. The NFL Draft will bring fans from all 32 NFL teams; not just the Chiefs opponent for a game. Most of the media may leave after the first day of the draft, but the fans that travel from far away will stay for a few days.

  2. Billions of dollars to build new stadiums? Fine. Consider dropping the complex right on the line in southern Jackson/Johnson County. Bi-State quickly becomes an imperative.
