Meet Dr. Erin Mateer, OB/GYN on staff at Oak Hill Hospital

– My approach to my patients
is to use my knowledge and experience to help
each patient meet their care goals, whatever they may be. I’m a general obstetrician
and gynecologist. Obstetrically, I perform
vaginal deliveries and cesareans and complete
care from conception until delivery and post-partum. Gynecologically, I take care
of women from adolescence until menopause and do a
full range of procedures. I did my undergraduate
in Washington, D.C., at George Washington University. Then I went on to law
school at Howard Law. Then I changed course a bit
and looked at my career goals and decided to go toward medicine, so then I did medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University and then I completed my residency training also in Washington, D.C., at
Washington Hospital Center and Georgetown University. I chose OB/GYN ’cause I’ve
always had an interest in women’s issues. It was my studies in
college, it was my focus when I was working in a legal capacity, so it was kind of a natural transition when I was choosing a
specialty in medical school. In terms of what draws me to it, I like the variety, I like
the office work as well as the surgeries, I love
obstetrics, and I love the fact that I get to be part
of a happy life event that at least some of the time, people are coming to my
office because they’re happy about something as opposed
to having a problem they’d like me to solve. My best days in medicine are
when I have happy patients who meet their treatment goals. Whether it’s a healthy baby
after a difficult pregnancy or some difficult or
embarrassing gynecologic problem that I can find a solution to. It’s when I have happy patients
that were having problems and now they’re not.
