Meet Jen Hansen, ANP, Women’s Health | Ascension Indiana

Hi, my name is Jennifer Hansen. I’m a nurse practitioner. The biggest way to build trust with the patient
is to get to know the patient first, find out what their life is about, their family,
what they do for fun, what defines them, and even asking patients, “What are you known
for? What are you famous for?” in their family. Getting to actually know them as a human,
not just their cancer diagnosis, helps build that trust that you’re there to help the whole
person, not just treat their cancer. Being through a lot of the process myself,
making those decisions and going through surgery as well myself, I’m able to relate not only
to what it’s like to heal physically, but also some of that emotional decisions and
healing that you go through as well. Most rewarding about my job is when I get
to see a woman go through probably one of the hardest times of her life when she’s diagnosed
with breast cancer. Lots of times, I’m there from the beginning,
either the first visit or sometimes even the first person that lets them know of their
diagnosis, and then getting to follow up with them the next year, two years, three years,
and seeing how much they’ve grown through their breast cancer, how they’ve gotten through
treatment, become a survivor, and how well they’re doing.
