Meet The Woman Who Learned That Her Mother Passed As White | Megyn Kelly TODAY

>>>A SECRETIVE MOTHER, A GRANDFATHER SHE HAD NEVER MET AND A FAMILY HISTORY SHE NEVER EXPECTED. GAIL COULD NOT HAVE PREDICTED WHAT SHE WOULD DISCOVER WHEN SHE DECIDED TO DIG INTO HER MOTHER’S MYSTERIOUS PAST. WATCH.>>THIS IS MY MOM AND DAD. AND AS FAR AS I KNOW, MY FATHER WENT TO HIS GRAVE NEVER KNOWING MY MOM’S SECRET. MY PARENTS MET DURING WORLD WAR II. MY MOM WAS AN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING LLY BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. MY DAD, HE HAD A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR. HE SERVED IN THE PACIFIC. HE WAS VERY PROUD OF THAT.>>Reporter: IN 1944, AFTER THE WAR, HAROLD MARRIED OLIVEIRA FREDERICK. THEY SETTLED IN PALMA, OHIO. THROUGHOUT HER CHILDHOOD, GAIL SAID HER MOTHER MYSTIFIED HER IN SOME WAYS.>>SHE WAS METICULOUS ABOUT HER MAKEUP. SHE WOULD WEAR A LIGHT FOUNDATION MAKEUP TO BED AT NIGHT, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS A LITTLE STRANGE. SHE WOULD NEVER GO OUT IN THE SUN, UNLESS SHE HAD A WIDE-BRIM HAT. SHE WOULD COVER HER HANDS WITH GLOVES. DIDN’T LIKE TO BE IN THE SON.>>Reporter: BUT GAIL SAID THE BIGGEST MYSTERY WAS HER MOTHER’S SELECTIVE MEMORY WHEN TALKING ABOUT HER OWN FATHER.>>I SAID, MOM, WHEN HE WAS BORN? WHEN DID HE DIE? I DON’T KNOW. I CAN’T REMEMBER.>>Reporter: GROWING UP, GAIL NEVER SAW ONE PHOTO OF HER GRANDFATHER. FINALLY, IN 1995, WHEN SHE WAS 48, SHE DECIDED TO SEARCH FOR HIS IDENTITY, COMBING THROUGH MICROFILM.>>AT FIRST, I COULDN’T FIND HIM. THEN, I PUT IN THE 1900 LOUISIANA CENSUS RECORDS AND I SEE THE NAME. THERE ARE ALL THESE FREDERICKS IN THE SAME HOUSEHOLD. I NOTICED SOMETHING CURIOUS, NEXT TO ALL THEIR NAMES IS THE LETTER “B.” I GO TO THE HEAD OF THAT COLUMN TO SEE WHAT IT STANDS FOR. AND IT SAYS RACE. I THOUGHT, “B”? DOES THAT MEAN BLACK?>>Reporter: GAIL WANTED TO CONFRONT HER MOTHER. BUT FIRST, SHE REACHED OUT TO THE STATE OF LOUISIANA, REQUESTING HER MOTHER’S BIRTH CERTIFICATE. I PRETENDED I WAS MY MOTHER AND I LOST MY BIRTH CERTIFICATE. I OPENED THAT BIRTH CERTIFICATE AND IN THE PARENTHESES, THERE WAS COL. AND I SAID, MY BIRTH CERTIFICATE SAID COL, CAN YOU EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT THAT MEANS? THEY SENT ME A VERY OFFICIAL LETTER BACK AND SAID, COL IS FOR COLORED. I WAS SPEECHLESS. I DIDN’T KNOW IF MY MOTHER KNEW. I AM THINKING, HOW COULD SHE NOT KNOW THIS? AND WHY HAS SHE NEVER SAID ANYTHING TO ME?>>WE’RE JOINED BY GAIL WHO HAS WRITTEN ABOUT HER MOTHER’S SECRET PAST IN A NEW BOOK “WHITE LIKE HER.” THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE.>>THANK YOU VERY MUCH.>>YOU DID WORK UP THE NERVE TO ASK YOUR MOTHER ABOUT THIS CERTIFICATE. YOU SAT DOWN WITH HER. YOU KNEW IT HAD TO BE FACE-TO-FACE.>>THIS IS NOT A CONVERSATION YOU HAVE ON THE TELEPHONE.>>AND YOU ASKED HER WHY SHE’S LISTED AS, QUOTE, COLORED ON THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE.>>I DID. I TOLD HER, I FOUND A BERTH CERTIFICATE. IT SAID COLORED. SHE BECAME VERY INDIGNANT WITH ME. SHE SAID, I DON’T KNOW WHAT BIRTH CERTIFICATE YOU HAVE, BUT MINE SAYS I’M WHITE. I SAID, WAIT A MINUTE. I HAVE OTHER KUDOCUMENTS I CAN SHOW YOU. THE CENSUS RECORDS, YOUR FATHER IS LISTED AS BLACK. AND I HAVE A LETTER FROM THE STATE OF LOUISIANA SAYING THAT COL MEANS COLORED. SHE GOT VERY QUIET. VERY QUIET. AND SHE IS SITTING IN THIS LARGE CHAIR. IT SEEMED LIKE THE CHAIR WAS SWALLOWING HER. SHE LOOKED AT ME AND SAID, YOU HAVE TO PROMISE ME YOU WILL NEVER TELL ANYONE UNTIL AFTER I DIE. AND THEN, SHE SAID, HOW WILL I HOLD MY HEAD UP WITH MY FRIENDS IF THEY KNOW?>>WOW. WHAT YEAR WAS THAT?>>THAT WAS 1997, WHEN I CONFRONTED HER.>>SO, SHE HAD SPENT HER ADULT LIFE PASSING, A TERM YOU USE IN THE BOOK.>>YES.>>CAN YOU TELL THE AUDIENCE WHAT THAT IS?>>SHE WAS PASSING FOR WHITE. MY MOTHER, IF YOU LOOK AT THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF HER, SHE VISUALLY LOOKS WHITE. ON THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE AND IN THE CENSUS RECORD, SHE IS LISTED AS COLORED OR BLACK. WHEN SHE DECIDED TO MARRY MY FATHER, WHO BY THE WAY, IS WHITE, SHE MOVED NORTH TO OHIO AND FROM THAT MOMENT ON, SHE TOOK ON THE WHITE RACE THAT SHE PASSED. SHE WENT FROM BEING DESIGNATED BLACK TO BEING DESIGNATED WHITE.>>YOU WRITE IN THE BOOK ABOUT THAT MOMENT THAT YOU SAW COL AND KNEW IT TO BE COLORED. AND WRITE ABOUT THE DAY I FOUND OUT I WASN’T WHO I THOUGHT I WAS. WHAT DID YOU GO THROUGH UPON THIS REALIZATION?>>THE INITIAL DISCOVERY WAS 1995 WHEN I WAS AT THE FAMILY HISTORY CENTER. I ALWAYS THINK ABOUT THIS. I WALKED INTO THAT FAMILY HISTORY CENTER A WHITE WOMAN. TOTALLY CONVINCED I WAS A WHITE WOMAN. AND I WALKED OUT OF THERE AND I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I WAS. I DIDN’T KNOW IF I WAS MIXED RACE, IF I WAS BLACK, IF I WAS STILL WHITE. I HAD NO IDEA. IT WAS SHOCKING TO ME. YOU KNOW, LIKE FINDING OUT YOU’RE ANOTHER PERSON THAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW.>>RIGHT. AND YOUR MOM IS ANOTHER PERSON. I KNOW YOU WRITE IN THE BOOK ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL NOW IN RETROSPECT. SHE LEFT CLUES FOR YOU. LIKE LITTLE BREAD CRUMBS THROUGH THE FOREST. WE’RE GOING THE TALK ABOUT WHAT SOME OF THOSE WERE ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT GAIL SAYS HER OWN

  1. A really fascinating story.

As professional as Megyn Kelly is, you can't have certain people interviewing on issues like this concerning racial issues. She just comes across as disingenuous.

Really should have chosen someone else.

  2. I'm sorry but her momma ain't black. She has so much white in her, it ain't even funny. Run her DNA, she is showing up 90% white. Stop it. This drop of black blood isht is ridiculous.

  3. Seriously Meghan Kelley whose racist act on Fox includes the infamous 'Santa Claus is white' show, where she goes on record demonstrating her racist mindset.

  4. Her mom was actually right: there is evidence that whites do get better treatment than blacks in the medical system. See: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK220337/
White privilege is still pervasive in so many domains in our society; we need to keep working to eliminate these inequities and barriers.

  5. Oh shes got a book to sell makes sense. Race is trendy right now so people exploit it for political & financial reasons otherwise it's not a thing.

  6. That serves her dad right! Here he went thinking Blacks were inferior and all that time his father in-law was a brotha. LOL. Now just imagine all the anti-LGBTQ guys out there who are probably married to a transgender and don't even know it.

  7. Is this a disaster?
Black is still human. Isn't it?
If you are white no one is going to ask to see your birth certificate. You don't meet people and say hi I'm Julie, I'm white.
    I hated the whole thing

  8. What does this matter and why is this the subject of a show? This seems racist, stupid and the woman seemed devastated about finding out her mom was black, dumb woman

  9. White ain't no such thing as a white person weak minded weak genes hate the sun dad hate melenated people stay pale and receive the judgement of the pale rider

  10. I meant a friend who directed me to spell caster called Papa Egbe online who help people to solve their relationship and marriage problems. I was really skeptical before i wrote to him and he told me not to worry about anything, that i should give him a day for him to cast a spell for me and after 2 days i was really surprised my ex called me and started begging for me to take her back . That is how my ex came back to me and she no longer think of other people, but me and me alone and am happy my money was not wasted. Write Papa Egbe on papaegbeherbalhome @ gmail com
I'M a testimony believe it of not. I HAVE DONE MY PART BY PASSING OUT THIS INFO To people outside having love issues and marital problems.

  11. im Black we dont except mixed Race people I'm black and proud we are the superior original human race and Gods Chosen

  12. If her mother is Black, how is she pure Caucasian, and her mother does not look like a black women, I dont know if this is a made up story or not.

  13. Luckily you DIDN'T tell the police cause you'd be beaten shot or even killed. Who cares what color you are as long as your a good person

  14. NBC and MSM race baiters and dividers. Pity parties, to beating dead horses over and over again. How about some real news? Or how about putting that woman on that claims her Ancestry checks said she is a little bit of everything world wide. I wanna hear that story and see the family tree going back sixty thousand years.

  15. “My mum was a beautiful woman”… “My dad had a great sense of humour” 😂 That made me laugh. I love these sort of stories though ❤️

  16. I think we sometimes forget that times were different back then and people might have pass as white or hide their race to have better opportunties for themselves and their children. Its difficult that people went through this and had to keep the secret for years.

  17. im asian and i dont see her mother as black i find her very european looking like greek or romanian or a gypsy girl. well gypsy originally came fron west asia so maybe her mom gas some western asia roots idk .

  18. Funny here in Canada, if you found out your mother was black…..Big deal. I found out my dads mother was half aboriginal, again….big deal.

  19. Ummm her mom was white, she’s white… blah blah blah. Why is this a thing? The amount of African blood they may have is insignificant and they have ZERO African features. Again, why is this a thing?

  20. Oh honey you are White. A very beautiful woman too. Thank you for your story it just confirmed my conviction that White people are just light skin Black people.

  21. "After the forum, Cramer was asked by the Times Herald if she wanted to clarify her response.

“As long as, how can I put this? What Kathy Hayman doesn’t know is that her family is in the wrong,” she said. “(A) husband and wife need to be the same race. Same thing with kids. That’s how it’s been from the beginning of, how can I say, when God created the heaven and the earth. He created Adam and Eve at the same time. But as far as me being against blacks, no I’m not.”"
This is happening today in Michigan.

  22. Well now is so easy to know your roots trough dna and people may be surprised to find out the family tree goes way beyond. For example my mom is Pto Rican but got dna done and she have Jewish, Portuques, native american, French, Saharan and more. Lol

  23. I didn't think the mother was that good looking. Now that the daughter wants to think her mother is good-looking all the power to her. But I thought the mother was kind of ugly actually.

You look really white. Obama is 1/2 black and Obama doesn't even look white at all. He looks black as all get out. Of course Obama is a confirmed homosexual

  24. I am mixed I’m tan but very light I have curly hair every time I told someone I was black they said your to white do you even go outside there’s no way your black people may say I’m over reacting but the discrimination I get is disgusting

  25. In the American continent, we’re all mixed. People mixed right after the europeans came to these lands. Im a black and white from mexico, but people called me hispanic or latino. The children of espanols born in these lands were called Hispanics. The word Hispanic means “ property of spain” Latino is not a culture, ethnic group or tribe or people Latin was a language spoken by the ancient romans. Italians are Latinos not us. The right term for us mis MESTIZO, which means “ mixed person “

  26. Is this really a big deal? the mother clearly only has a drop of black… and she probably has a drop of asian and a drop of middle eastern etc etc/.. i mean with all these DNA tests people are doing these days, its clear VERY few of us (if any) are 100% white or black or asian… so why is her 1 drop of black such an issue?

  27. Sorry but that woman's mother isn't black. She might have a black grandparent or something, but she is very light and has no African features.

  28. When are they gonna talk about how the whole point is that black people were subjugated, could care less about her stupid pity story talk about the real issues white ladys

  29. Lots of white People running around knowing that they are black… but pretend they are white. Especially the ones in the south.😉

  30. There is really nothing wrong to have black blood in your veins, no need to get upset by it. You have been put onto this earth by love, you seem to have a pretty good life, it's a gif, so enjoy it, by the way every blood is red in appearance.

  31. Is this really important?? Who cares !! What I've learnt in life is that any race can be fun a good laugh and decent and any race can be an absolute arsehole. It's all about the person. Not all whites are Nazi's and not all blacks are rapists it's just the media like to keep everyone permanently nervous

  32. This woman to actaully come out with her family history… to claim her ancestry that IT IS indeed Black? Wow big up to you!! So many whites hate blacks because of their own ancestry and would never share the TRUTH! and then her father who was bigoted and married a black girl… I am not surprised though… how many of them have colored kids and don't claim them be ause they don't want to be know to have been with a black girl… the very light skinned black girls… Life is a show!

  33. I don't want to ever hear that white lady say anything bad about black people cause her momma is black!!

  34. There’s a book by Nella Larsen “Passing” and it’s the same concept. It’s so sad that this even exists… sigh. This is 😞 sad

  35. People just don't know how common this really is in this country. If your family has roots in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, or North Carolina – best believe you have mixed ancestry in your family roots

  36. We can pretty much infer that this woman’s mother was predominantly of European admixture, with her second largest component most likely compromised of African admixture.
She wasn’t passing for “white”, she was “white.”

This segment title, and this woman’s book perpetuates exclusion through laws of hypo-descent, which is nonsensical, and purely based in racist ideology. Are we really still ignorant to not recognize that black and white do not exist in human skin tone.

  37. Mixed people are still called coloured in south Africa. It's not derogatory it's actually a separate race of it's own.

  38. Kinda weird though, because nowadays you use terms like “African American” and “Caucasian” instead of black and white, especially in birth certificates.

  39. She did it for survival so her daughter wont suffer facing discrimination and racism. Illegal immigrants do it saying they are natural citizens in order not to be discriminated or deported becaus ewe kive in a world of propaganda in which education system tells them how great their country is a the rest of the countries are shitholes even though if its the other way around.

  40. when her mother met her father her father said hey i got a little black in me do you ? she said well no i don't he said well do you want some … along comes the daughter ..

  41. Why does everyone keep saying she "passed" as white? She is white. It's ridiculous to say a woman like that is black.
