THIS SUNDAY FEBRUARY 15th IS THE DEADLINE TO SIGN UP. RUNNING MORE THAN A MARATHON DURING THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY. A NORTHERN KENTUCKY MOM IS HELPING RAISE MONEY WITH EVERY MILE. JENNIFER SCHACK LEARNED ABOUT THE RILEY RUN. OF COURSE THERE ARE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN ME AND MY FRIENDS, BUT I THINK IT MIGHT BE A LITTLE HARD FOR THEM TO UNDERSTAND WHAT TURNER SYNDROME IS. 12-YEAR-OLD RILEY BAKER WAS DIAGNOSED WITH TURNER SYNDROME TWO YEARS AGO. IT’S A CHROME SO MANY ABNORMALITY THAT ONLY IMPACTS GIRLS. A VARIETY OF SYMPTOMS ARE POSSIBLE BUT ALL PATIENTS MUST DEAL WITH SHORT STATURE AND SOME DEGREE OF INFERTILITY. IT’S A CHALLENGING DIAGNOSIS AT TIMES. DOING THE SHOTS EVERY DAY, AND JUST GOING TO ALL THE DOCTOR VISITS. BUT TOGETHER WITH HER FAMILY SHE STARTED TO REALIZE THAT IT COULD BE A CHANCE TO HELP OTHERS. SO WE LOOKED AND SAW THAT FEBRUARY WAS AWARENESS MONTH. WE THOUGHT THAT WAS THE PERFECT TIME TO DO SOMETHING A LITTLE CRAZY TO RAISE AWARENESS. RILEY’S MOM KATIE STARTED THE RILEY 5K A DAY LAST YEAR RUNNING 3.1 MILES EACH DAY DURING THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY. THROUGH THE COMMUNITY’S DONATIONS THEY WERE ABLE TO RAISE MORE THAN $4,000 FOR CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL SUPPORTING RESEARCH FOR TURNER SYNDROME. NOW THEY ARE BACK AT IT THIS YEAR. I WISH I COULD SAY IT WAS BLISSFUL EVERY DAY BUT IT’S REALLY COLD. [LAUGHTER] THIS YEAR EVEN MORE RUNNERS ARE HITTING THE PAVEMENT AND THE TREADMILL. I’M DOING MOST OF MINE INDOORS RIGHT NOW WHERE IT’S WARM. [LAUGHTER] NOT EVERYONE IS ABLE TO RUN THE FULL 5K A DAY BUT MANY IN THE COMMUNITY ARE COMMITTING TO THEIR OWN DAILY RUNNING GOALS IN SUPPORT. THE FIRST WEEK OF FEBRUARY MORE THAN 140 MILES WERE LOGGED TOTALING MORE THAN $5,000 IN DONATIONS. MONEY GOING TO HELP GIRLS BLOSSOM INTO YOUNG WOMEN. IN MOST CASES YOU CAN’T TELL THAT SOMEONE DOES OR DOESN’T HAVE TURNER SYNDROME AND IT DOESN’T DEFINE THEM IT JUST MAKES THEM STRONGER AND MORE BEAUTIFUL. JENNIFER SCHACK, WLWT NEWS 5. ABOUT HALF THE MONTH TO GO AND THEY ARE ALREADY RAISING MORE MONEY THAN THEY DID LAST YEAR. BY THE WAY TURNER SYNDROME AFFECTS ONE IN 2,000 GIRLS AND CAN BE DETECTED AS EARLY AS BIRTH.
