I’m Lindsay Scruggs. I’m a nurse practitioner at
Durham OB/GYN where I follow patients from adolescence all
the way through lifehood. I have had what I consider
a unique opportunity to work for Duke at an in-patient ICU
setting prior to OB/GYN and now in the out-patient setting. And so, I consider those to be two
fairly different environments. But, in working in either setting,
what I’ve seen is colleagues and staff really care about patient care and
individualized care and working with the patient to reach the
goals that are specific to that patient. And so, I think compassion is a big
part of Duke medicine regardless of what area you’re in. But, that really applies to OB/GYN where
things are maybe a little more sensitive. For a first time meeting,
generally I like to introduce myself, and then, kind of let them know
what to expect for the visit. Because I think OB/GYN is a different kind
of setting that leaves people feeling a little more vulnerable. And generally, I like to talk to
people about what they’re here for and then, kind of talk to them about what
their expectations are because I think individualizing patient
care is really important. And in OB/GYN preventative care is a big
component of that as well as treating and managing things. And so, I love that aspect of
OB/GYN because you get to fair wind preventative care as well
which can last a lifetime.
