And helping to take care
of my little brothers and sisters when she was pregnant, and
also, I used to go into work with her. And so she sort of inspired
me to go into medicine. When I studied women’s
literature in college, I started to get really motivated
to better understand why or how important it was for
women to have access to family planning, contraception, and how important that
was for their rights and our freedom. And so it was during that time that
I really decided that I wanted to be an OB/GYN. I see women of all ages, I’ve taken
care of a few pediatric patients and all the way up until women
towards the end of life. I take care of women of all
different races and ethnicities. I’d like to take care of women when
they are trying to get pregnant or even if they get pregnant by mistake. And trying to make a decision about
what to do in those situations. Women have come to me who have different
requests as far as their gender identity. So there are women in our community
of all shapes and sizes, and we come from different places. And I’ve found that some have
come from other providers or other places where they felt
that their personal preferences, whether it’s their sexuality or their
gender identity, wasn’t that supported. And I really enjoy being there for them
and helping to investigate what we can do for them, so that they have what they need
from a hormonal contraceptive standpoint. When I was in college, I went to my
first personal OB/GYN appointment. And I felt really vulnerable and
more scared than I thought I would. And I was fortunate to have
someone who is very kind, gentle. They took their time, and I think that
that experience recognizing how much goes into a woman’s care when they start going
to see a doctor really stuck with me. And so I’ve always kind of strived to
take the time to talk to patients, explain what I’m doing, and
make sure that they have what they need. And I find that to be very rewarding.
