Oncologist Dr. Leon Hwang On Treating Breast Cancer | Kaiser Permanente

>>Leon Hwang, MD, Medical Oncologist,
Chief of Oncology, DC, PG & MOCO,
Kaiser Permanente:
– Hi, my name is Leon Hwang. I’m the Oncology Service Chief for the Washington D.C.
and Southern Maryland area. I have a team of eight
oncologists that work with me, including 16 nurses and staff. We also have a total of 20
oncologists in the entire area, including two newly added
pediatric oncologists. I have interest in
clinical research trials. I think that’s what really
exciting about cancer care, is because there are so
many new drugs coming out. The science is actually
coming to the patients now. We are identifying the
causes for cancer now. We are developing therapies specific for each patient’s cancer. We’re developing new therapies
using the immune system that have far fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy. I really do think that this is a time to try out these new
therapies, to have a new hope. The last five or 10 years,
we’ve had a revolution in new cancer therapies, so I
have several patients of mine that have been through all
these new fancy therapies. One after the other. They’ve all been surprised at how easy the therapies are now
and they have been able, how able they are to just
continue living their lives the way they’ve wanted to live their lives and spend time with their family. I have patients that have
finished their bucket list and are wondering what to do next. I’ve had time to develop
long term friendships with these patients because
they’ve been with me for so long now. I do feel like everyday,
when I’ve gone home, that I’ve done a good thing and
I’ve really helped somebody.
