Pregnancy Skin Care – Hair During Pregnancy | Parents

There are some good things and not so great
things that happen to your hair during and after pregnancy. The good news is you will
have the fullest hair of your life. You will love your hair while you’re pregnant, and
the reason is that your hair stopped shedding while you’re pregnant, so normally about 10
percent of our hairs are shedding any given time, and that stops during pregnancy. The
downside is that you’re not shedding hair anywhere else either. So you may find you
have more hair on your face, your belly, and your back which can be distressing. You can
remove the hair by waxing, shaving, threading, or laser hair removal, but know that if you
don’t do any of those things, the hair is gonna come out anyway about 6 months after
you deliver. Now I need to warn you about something. About 3 to 6 months after you have
your baby, you’re gonna start shedding a lot of hair. This is called telogen effluvium,
and it’s totally normal. It can be very alarming because you’ll lose up to 200 hairs a day
and many of those from the top of your head. I remember even though I counsel women on
this every single day how freaked out I was when it happened with my own children. What
you need to do is take a deep breath. Time and patience is gonna bring all that hair
back.
