>>Varuna Raizada, MD:
So my field of expertise is helping women
who have pelvic floor disorders. It’s a broad, general term
that includes conditions of the bladder, such as
leakage of bladder, inability to empty
your bladder well, having frequent
bladder infections, having bladder
pain issues, bowel diseases. Lastly, I help women
with vaginal issues and that’s a
very broad term. It could mean things like, “My vaginal walls are coming out
of my body, I can see them
coming out,” this condition
is called prolapse. Or, conditions where
women are having a lot of discomfort, pain due to due to
age-related changes of menopause, also known
as vaginal atrophy. Even helping women who are born
with genetic disorders where their external
genital organs don’t look normal. So we restore anatomy, reconstruct those areas
when need be. I think we’re all drawn to certain patient types. For instance pediatrician
may love children. For me, I really do
like women of a certain age. They have so
much wealth of experience and wisdom to impart, so I’ve always
been drawn to that patient population,
and hence, I opted to pursue
this field. Also, when I
joined the field, there was
a lack of experts in the field and
it was it was a new, upcoming field that needed
more physicians. When patients
come to our clinic, one thing that
they will receive is understanding
and warmth. These are very
embarrassing conditions; it takes a long time before patients
actually broach the subject to their
primary care doctors and get the
adequate referrals. And so we are
sensitive to that. The other thing that you will notice
is availability, we’re available to you
all the time, be it me during
business hours, or my associates
during off hours. So if you have
any emergencies, we are here for you be it post-operative
emergencies, or just simple
questions as well. As a physician,
what you will receive from me
is true counseling. I understand
and I respect that this is your body and that ultimately
it is your decision to take on the medical
recommendations that I make. However, it is my job
to hold your hand through this process,
help you understand all the treatments that
you are going through as if you are
my own family, my sister, my friend,
and so that’s what you will receive
personally from me. [music begins] The most satisfying
part of my job is for my patients
to come back and say, “Dr. Raizada,
before I met you, I had given up running, I had given up exercising, I was hardly sexually active, I was so embarrassed the way I looked, and now you’ve
given me a lease of life.” And the most commonly
said thing to me by these patients is, “Why didn’t I come to
you ten years ago?” [music ends]
