Staying healthy and on the court with MMP – Orthopedics & Sports Medicine

>>[Music] I went to UCLA, I was
a team physician there as well as had a full practice. At the sort of division
one level. I took care of women’s
basketball, men’s soccer, water polo, some football. So then I moved back
to Maine last March and joined this practice
as it was growing and sort of excited to start a new thing. I really bring all my
experiences back to Maine. The Red Claws is almost a
perfect fit because it’s fun to be involved in that sort
of elite level and take care of these professional athletes. It’s fun. They’re
really appreciative. They listen to you. They want to know. They want to learn about
what’s going on with them. And they’re, you
know, it’s exciting. And it’s fun to watch. [ Music ]>>Every day we’re in
touch with a trainer. So we’re pretty much
on top of what’s going on with ongoing injuries. There are a number of
players that have minor things that they’re still playing
with but we’re treating. Or maybe you have just
come out for a few games that we’re getting an update on. So we arrive before the game,
usually a good half hour ahead of time in the training room. And touch base with the trainer
in terms of getting a sense of who’s playing that night and which injuries we should be
watching for, things like that. And then the rest of the
game is really just being on the sidelines
and being available. Obviously we go down
during halftime to reassess. And the thing is we’re there
for the other team as well. They do not have physicians that
travel with them. We don’t travel with
Red Claws when they go. [ Music ]>>This is an awesome place. The energy and the way
people are friendly here is very surprising. And it’s good because it makes
you, it gives you security. And it makes you feel
at peace which I mind because you’re not worried
about getting injured. You’re just worried
about playing because you know it’s a good
doctor that’s going to take care of you and make sure
you’re straight. Some therapy places, they don’t
really know what exactly you need to do to stay fit or get back healthy
as soon as possible. But here they do. You just need to be dedicated
to getting healthy when you want to do something you love. And you want to get back on
that court, help your team. Of course, you’re going to do whatever it
takes to get healthy.>>I like working with athletes
because they are proactive about their health, right. It’s really important for
them to have their health, to have their bodies and minds
like working at 100 percent or 120 percent so
they can perform. And so if they get injured,
they want to get better. They’re very motivated. As I said, they listen,
they want to learn. And I have fun, you know,
teaching both residency, fellows, as well as my patients about
how to make themselves better, make themselves healthier. So I think it’s some motivation
and they want to get better. So it makes my job easy.>>I’ve traveled with a number of pro teams and
various athletes. And I’m really impressed with
this team, this group of guys, what kind of people they are. I think they’re going
to change, you know, the whole persona
of an NBA player. These are really,
really good guys but across the board they
work together as a team. You can see it on the sidelines. And they’re obviously
very skilled athletes, skilled players. They’re wonderful people, and I think that would
really change the game. [ Music ]
