The Health Trust – Google Impact Challenge: Bay Area 2014 – Top 10

[MUSIC PLAYING] FREDERICK FERRER: My
name is Frederick Ferrer. I’m the CEO of The Health Trust. What we knew about low
income neighborhoods is that when you have
a lack of healthy food, we really have an increase
in chronic disease. And what we propose
is to really be able to increase healthy
food access in neighborhoods. One of the ways we
do that is by having residents become entrepreneurs. What we want to be able to
do is have more urban gardens to offer 50,000 pounds
of fresh produce to over 10,000 Bay
Area residents. We want to make
sure that our corner stores are healthy stores. We want to bring small farmers
markets into neighborhoods. If we can make it
easier for families to access healthier
food, then we know that they’re
going to choose that. We think that’s really a
way to develop a sustainable answer, which is what we want
when we want to improve health.
