#TomorrowsDiscoveries: Stopping the Spread of Breast Cancer Cells | Andrew Ewald, Ph.D.

The most dangerous aspect of
breast cancer is its ability to metastasize. To spread and form new tumors
throughout the body years or even decades after
initial diagnosis. I am Andrew Ewald and my lab studies breast
cancer metastasis. We work to understand how breast
cancer cells acquire the ability to leave the main tumor and the
molecular tools that enable them to build new tumors in
the lungs, bones, and brain. We discovered a common molecular
program that is activated during metastasis in many
types of breast cancer. We’re now working to leverage
this insight to identify patients whose breast cancer
is most likely to spread. And to develop new therapies
to extend their lives. [MUSIC]
