the numbers are very alarming one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime a woman’s risk for breast cancer nearly doubles if one of her relatives have been diagnosed that can be a mom or a sister this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and next Thursday October 11th UF health is hosting a free forum called what everyone should know about breast health joining me now is the medical director at UF health Breast Center of Jacksonville dr. Shelly Massoud thank you so much for coming in and talking about this thank you for having me it’s so crucial to women’s health and this free forum is going to answer a lot of questions what do you think are the biggest things that that women and men don’t really know about breast cancer but one of the most important thing that men and women need to know is no one is secure nobody no one has any chance of saying that no I will not get breast cancer because breast cancer is a disease that can occur in any age any place any ethnic you know group and often you don’t really know that till it really manifests itself with some sort of a sign and symptoms so what we have at the moment is the ability to detect cancer early and that is first with the knowledge and you know one of the things that is very important enemy has not recognized that people that they even develop breast cancer if they know about their breast cancer they know about what kind of breast cancer that they have and they participate in treatment planning with the physicians to get the most optimal therapy not the most aggressive therapy because most optimal the most optimal therapy they often do much better because every patients different absolutely and every cancer is diff absolutely breast cancer is a family of the disease it’s not one single disease and majority of the breast cancers they are at the lower low-grade concept that they can be managed very very nicely and the patients often have a long term as far as the life and mortality is concerned there are small segments of breast cancers they are very aggressive and those are the one that they require naturally much more aggressive terror and patients also need to understand the types of tumor that they might have yes yes and that is where this forum is sort of structured in a way that we have a multidisciplinary group of our physicians at the UF Breast Health Center that there are specialists in different areas and they are available in this forum to respond to the questions of the you know audience and we have a nice dinner for them is free they need to call my office so that we would have enough you know food for them and more importantly this is something a service to the community to provide breast health education to the public both men and women those people that they have breast cancer as those people that they do not and this is a way to prepare yourself and be aware of the fact that how best you can protect yourself you know one thing I want to ask you about too is I think when women get the diagnosis there is a there’s a panic I mean obviously I mean you know they’re unsure about what to do a lot of times they don’t go get a second opinion they just want to attack it and make sure that they are there taking care of it in that way you say no matter what the second opinion is crucial well one of the most important thing that we have been able to offer to the community if this concept of second opinion for several reasons one is the fact that there are many look-alikes in breast cancer that it appears to look like cancer but they really are not they’re the pre malignant component of the breast cancer and therefore those they really need a follow-up management rather than any surgical intervention we have saved a lot of breast really in this community from that component of that so you need another set of I to take a look at it and make sure that you have cancer the second component is the fact that to know what kind of cancer we not only look at it the microscope and see what it is we do a lot of biomarker studies to characterize the tumor to see exactly what is the genetic makeup of the cancer and that is going to give an indication to for oncology and radiation oncologist surgeons and others to try to design and plan an individualized therapy for aggression that is individual to you dr. Massoud thank you so much for coming in and again you know I know we could ask you questions all morning but that’s what this breast cancer forum is for it Thursday October 11th it’s from 5:30 until 9 o’clock at night it’s at the Omni Hotel on Water Street once again they’re going to serve dinner there so you need to call the office and make your reservation you can call two four four six zero six nine
