University of Iowa Students Design Garment for Breast Cancer Survivors

(piano music) – [Anna] For our senior
design capstone project for biomedical engineering, my team chose to address the problem of truncal lymphoedema and
unilateral mastectomy patients, so we’ve been designing
a garment that’ll work to apply compression across the trunk. – [Genevieve] Engineering
is such a great field and applying what you’re
nerdy and passionate about to real world problems is
such a rewarding experience at the end of it. – [Amy] I think it’s inspiring
what they’re doing here because you’re taking the classroom work and you’re taking real world problems and you’re really bridging the gap. – [Genevieve] I did choose the project that I’m currently working on specifically because of my grandma. One of the factors that
we’re putting into our design is we want it to be cost-efficient because typically, compression garments are really expensive. We’ve talked to a couple plastic surgeons and other physical therapists
over in the hospital and they’ve been super helpful. – As a professor, I can’t
think of a better way to bring the classroom to real life. (piano music)
