A well woman exam is a physical exam that
assesses a woman’s overall health. It includes a clinical breast exam and a pap
smear but may also include an evaluation of blood pressure, weight, body mass index and
evaluation of your abdomen and lymph nodes. A clinical breast exam is an examination of
your breasts. Special attention will be given to the shape and texture of the breast and
location of any lumps. The area under both arms will also be examined. This is a good
time for women who are unsure of how to perform a self breast exam to speak with their doctor
and learn the right way. Also known as a Pap smear, it is a screening
test to detect cancerous or pre-cancerous cells on the cervix. The primary goal of this
test is the prevention of cervical cancer. The best way to treat cancer and other diseases
is through early detection. More than half of cervical cancer diagnoses are due to the
lack of screening. Women should begin having their well woman
exams around 21 year of age. Different ages require different screenings.
If you have a family history of any diseases or a concern about a specific issue be sure
to discuss it with your gynecologist. You should see your gynecologist for a well
woman exam annually. It’s a great time to discuss minimizing health risks and healthy
habits.
