What If You Only Drank Soda?

With over 1.8 billion bottles of Coca-Cola sold
a day and nearly half of Americans (48%) drinking at least one glass of soda or pop a
day, it’s safe to say many of us love a sugary drink. But what would happen to our
brains and bodies if we only drank soda? As the drink enters your mouth, it’s high
acid content begins to erode the enamel on your teeth, and the microorganisms in your
plaque start to feed off the sugar, which can lead to cavities. Finish the can, and
you may have consumed upwards of 46 grams of sugar. The receptors on your tongue sense
this and send a message to your cerebral cortex, activating the reward centre of your brain,
which says “more please!” After a week of substituting the recommended 8 daily glasses
of water for cola instead, you would have consumed around 5432 extra Calories. And this
is one of the biggest health problems linked to carbonated drinks: weight gain. It’s been estimated that ⅕ of the weight
gained in the US between 1977 and 2007 can be attributed to soft drinks. Furthermore,
Yale researchers found that when people drink soft drinks, they also consume more calories,
mainly because people don’t accurately account for the added calories in their beverage.
On top of this, the high fructose corn syrup – which is the primary soda sweetener – is
not metabolized in our bodies the same way other sugars are. They increase liver fat,
upping the risk of cardiovascular disease, and don’t stimulate the hormones insulin
and leptin. These hormones help the body signal when we are full, to prevent overeating. The
disruption of insulin also increases the risk of diabetes. Overall, research suggests that
reducing the amount of sugar in drinks could prevent 1 million cases of obesity. So, should we swap in diet drinks instead?
Surprisingly there is still a link between artificial sweeteners and weight gain as well.
Experiments have found that the sweet taste, whether from real sugar or artificial sweetener,
enhances our appetite. Not to mention many diet drinkers allow themselves to eat more
because they believe they have already reduced calories, thinking “I’m having a diet
soda so I can have a large fry with my burger”. But soft drinks can also age us. Telomeres
are protective caps on the end of our chromosomes which shorten over time. And it turns out
that their rate of shortening is nearly the same in a person who drinks 600ml of soda
a day, as it is in a smoker. So, what if you drank 2 litres of pop every
day? Well, one woman did just that for 16 years straight, until she was hospitalized at age
31. With no family history of heart problems, she suffered from arrhythmia and fainting
spells, and tests found her severely deficient in potassium, as both fructose and caffeine
can lead to potassium loss through urine and diarrhea. Luckily, our bodies have an amazing
ability to recover and once she quit, her potassium levels and other complications began

  2. I just stopped drinking soda but i have drank soda everyday since i was 16 im 44 and still have a 6 pack (ABS) and am not skinny. genetics can make or break you.

  4. cant they swap out the sucros for real sugar. when u buy cane sugar its like double the price but for coco cola its not gonna be that drastic of a price increase.

  5. I think one of the main reasons we drink soda so much is because it's fizzy, as well as tastes good. There's nothing to it, just that :/

  6. I looked this up because I've been drinking only soda for a week. My heart has started to skip beats, it's freaky. I think it's the soda. So I guess I'ma start drinking more water sips Dr pepper after I finish this one.

  7. I eat Dijiorno and drink Sparkling Punch, Big K, S.E. USA on a daily and nightly for well over a decade and I'm leaner than I was in high school and I smoke on a daily. Lol, I have been blessed with good genes, and for the record, I quit brown or citrus name brand sodas years ago. Sparkling punch is tasty, and it's carbonation stings like ginger ale and lasts twice as long. I drink HI-C between sodas and coffee every morning. So far it's only my teeth that have taken some dental work money from me…So far.

  8. I drink diet soda in place of water and black coffee by the espresso load …. whoops. Yeah ive lost 60 pounds as ive been on WW for two yrs but my teeth are yellow now and my liver isnt very good but it was much worse before losing weight. I drink coffee and diet soda in place of food. I eat salads, fresh fruit and eggs and lean chicken breast. Im addicted to caffeine and other amphetamine so there yougo

  10. i drink 2-4 lts of diet coke EVERY SINGLE DAY and 0 water, if i don't have it i get horrible fatigue and migranes and i'm also in a horribke bitchy mood lol

  11. The weight gain is pure BS for myself, I been drinking a 12 pack of Dr. Pepper or more a day for 40 years now. I haven't gained 1 pound.

  12. I haven't had soft drink for close to two months now, and as a result drank more water and the occasional tea. It's amazing how I don't have cravings for coke or fanta anymore as the thought of drinking it now is so unappealing! It's hard to do but completely worth it.

  13. The way I see things is its inevitable that everyone will eventually die, so whats the big deal? I've lived 68 years so far, drank Pepsi almost exclusively for about 40 years, and I'm not dead yet. I suppose they will call my demise as "suicide by sodapop." And I don't mind. The World has plenty of people, and nobody lives forever.

My pup always told me it dehydrated you and beileive me when I was cutti wood wih im the last thin I wanted was a pop ..even a beer didnt go well bothreallyenkoyable but I wud drink some water aswellbecause I would getaheadache working so hrd wih only sugar or alchohol ..if u like sugar try gatorade I water it down and use it when I play sports like hockey

  15. i drink about 4 cans of coke within 4 hours out of 1 day then brush my teeth after and of course everynight and drink water all day the next day

  16. I wanted to know if soda makes you dehydrated. Not if soda will lead you to the gateway drugs. Oh god what am I doing to myself drinking this

  17. I used to drink a 12 back a day damaged my esophogus and stomatch the doctor told me if i didnt stop id get diabetes.

  18. Knew it. I'm an alien. Been drinking soda since 1970. I'm 50 years old. Have all my hair and teeth. . I'm. 5'9" and 190lbs. Have had 4 cavities all before age 8. I've. A 34"waiat and still pretty fit for my age and carrier. So exception to the rule?
