Why do women get frequent urinary tract infections? – Frankfort Regional Medical Center

UTIs are more common
in women across all ages. UTIs are common in
men when there’s a degree of prostatic
obstruction they typically will have what are called
lower urinary tract symptoms. Either weak uninary
stream, hesitancy of urination,
intermittency of urination, frequency of urination,
urgency of urination, or nocturia or
nighttime urination, some degree of those symptoms
preceding a urinary tract infection. It’s very uncommon for men to
have a urinary tract infection without some degree
of obstruction. In women, because the
urethra is so short, it’s easier to have
anterior movement of bacteria from
the vaginal flora or the anal canal that
can move into the urethra and cause a urinary
tract infection. So more common in
women across all ages. More common in men
if there is a degree of prostatic obstruction.
